Fun Spot Atlanta closure

The_bullgod

Mega Poster
There are rumors about Fun Spot Atlanta closing permanently before the end of the year.
All rides and buildings will be demolished. What will happen with Arie Force One?

This would be... awful. Seriously hoping it's just a rumour that's gotten out of hand, but... I dunno. The fact that you can turn up at Fun Spot Atlanta at pretty much anytime and lap AF1 to your heart's content without waiting is, despite being enthusiast heaven, not exactly a good sign.
One of the best coasters on the planet, would be an incredible shame to lose it so soon.
Praying for a good outcome. 🙏

I wouldn’t be surprised.. having been on a day that should on paper have been busy, and finding it empty except a few fellow goons is concerning…

Being in the UK I've never visited Fun Spot Atlanta, but still sad to see a park close if the rumour is true. Having said that, any video i've seen of this park it always looks dead?

Wonder if ArieForce One would get relocated? I guess it's easier to relocate with a steel support structure? Imagine picking up such a new RMC second hand and it having the ability to be an absolute headliner! (Lost Island would be a shout).

It's probably just a rumour, surely? Though if it wasn't, ArieForce One would be a good purchase second hand. I'm not sure what else the park has, I'll check RCDB.

For the sake of a smaller business I hope this isn't true, but I would imagine Six Flags or even United Parks would be interested in having ArieForce One.

Ugh, I'm missing the creds.

I'm not one to prioritize a trip for a closing coaster I need (especially as most of the closures we see these days are creds that aren't all that good), but I may need to get down there for a random weekend this summer. I'm not willing to let AF1 slip into spiteful territory.

Arieforce one is definitely worth the trek. Especially at night, it runs INSANELY fast.

Here’s what’s going down, as this rumor began in my circle;

Two firsthand accounts of different park managers telling people this came together and lined up. A third person asked his contacts in Atlanta real estate to look into it and they found a land broker actively working with John Arie. A fourth trusted Atlanta enthusiast on X would later give everyone his account of real estate friends approaching him a month ago. Yesterday morning the group decided to officially leak it through a Discord server I run. I put it up on ParkFans forums initially and the adults in the room dug up some non-incriminatory tax/loan refinancing documents. Children on social media assumed those records were the source of the rumor without understanding them and spread them with the caption FUN SPOT IS CLOSING. A couple of heavyweight industry people are angry about this and have denied it. Doomposting for clicks.

So this is beyond the adults in the room now and we’re at the Internet freaking out stage. But it was let out of the bag more as a community service and less a Screamscape post, so I’ll give you the agreed story from the four accounts.

Kissimmee performs well financially but Orlando and Atlanta are both money pits. Fun Spot’s course of action is that one of them had to go and they’d rather keep their Florida operation intact. The hope is to have Atlanta closed and sold at year’s end and use it as a tax write off to keep Orlando afloat. Some smaller rides may be sold off, but the land and all permanent structures including ArieForce and the go-karts would be dusted for the guaranteed tax write off.

Somehow I don’t think ArieForce stands a chance at relocation. It’s a huge ride built into that park’s layout and ever so slightly used the terrain. By some weird Fun Spot logic (you can debate me on this) a tax write off is a more guaranteed injection of income that they desperately need. Taking it down and holding onto an asset that won’t likely find a buyer would be too costly and not a guaranteed win. There’s also zero shot anyone swoops in to “save” the park.

So yeahhh, not sure when but curtains are coming down on Fun Spot Atlanta. Best that can happen is everyone has some advanced intel and regardless of whether they’re motivated or not by the shoddy social media doom posts made by children who think they know better, they have time to plan a visit before this coaster is consigned to a big Defunctland video.

Yes… I wonder if Arie Force One really killed this park.

Wow in 24 hours this went from rumors to confirmed.
We have to hope AF1 will be sold/relocated but not taking the gamble. Imagine the kicking if you knew the park was closing, gambled, its not relocated and missed the chance! I'll use a long weekend, go to SFoG, Fun Spot, Atlanta for a day. An unexpected but nice weekend. A friend said the park "needs" 2 hours and he got 15 rides on AF1 with single train ops.

I see why it's closing. You do have to wonder if they banked on AF1 drawing crowds that never materialized.

I don’t post much (I lurk!) but this news makes me dust off the keyboard. So many happy memories of this park, not just Arie Force One (which I could ride time and time again) but of the staff, too. Didn’t manage to ride AF1 last year as it made a big bang noise going up the lift hill, but I thought next November I’d have another ride. And now I won’t, man I’m gutted. It broke my old phone, I got twatted in the face by a flying water bottle and nearly lost my glasses. Brilliant ride. I hope somebody saves it, but there something special about its current location, particularly that inversion and overbank behind the building is designed to channel riders screams into the field behind the park…the owner objected to the original design.

ArieForce One’s advantage is the fact it is a group-up RMC Coaster. This should make it a lot easier to unassemble if it were to be relocated, even if it would require some or all of the support structure being built again. This could be sent to one of the Fun Spot parks in Orlando as this would likely be a great financial decision as it adds to Orlando’s world class coaster collection and gives people a serious reason to go exploring more in Orlando. This is likely wishful thinking as I would certainly be more inclined to visit Orlando again for ArieForce One and this would be best case scenario and I hope ArieForce One finds a new location, but it would still be significantly more difficult than a regular steel coaster. If impossible, RIP ArieForce One.

Well that is a shame, never nice to see a park close let alone one with a world class coaster.

If they do hopefully sell it the closest big park lacking a RMC is Carowinds and that would be a fab home or for something smaller but still decent Wild Adventures and that would be a great new star coaster for them. Both these parks companies have RMCs but not the best track record to be fair, hope the rides and Arieforce find new homes wherever they can.
