I think marketing comes into this - some parks have realized they can get a decent impact from just branding or themeing something in the right way, and cut costs on the ride hardware. So there's less of a push for something groundbreaking.

I went to Wintertraum in late November a couple years ago and it was lovely. Short queues for everything and very atmospheric and lovely.
