Afanc [Intamin Mega-Lite] - POV ONLINE PAGE 2

When I first started playing with Newton I began building mega-lites. I love the little rides, even though I've yet to ride one =( I've seen the punch they can produce! I've been determined to design one but they never seemed to hit the spot. During the Christmas period I've had a lot of time to play around and this layout kinda just flowed out! And I think I have it finalised, it usually takes about a month to be truly happy with a layout but this took a matter of days, I'm actually combing through thoroughly to make sure I did't just get a bit too excited and missed points out. But all I know is it's definitely my next project.

Anyway I have a picture here, it's early days still, I may re-evaluate some aspects of the layout (there's a teeny pump in a hill *eye roll*). Also I doubt I'll use these colours, they don't have the right impact. I have a vague idea of theme but I'm not 100% and it'll probably need some 3ds. So yeah here's a little teaser and watch this space.

Looks pretty exciting to me, Bob.

You're coasters are always good so I look forward to this. Nice to see a Mega-Lite aswell.

A few close up screens of the track. Don't wanna show the layout in it's entirerity but just showing progress with it. I quite like these colours, and I quite like the idea of working an old-school horror theme with the ride. I'll see how it pans out, just been playing around with OC and Wings3D but I'm not having much luck =(. I don't want an overload of 3ds, more on the lines of what Andre did with The Red Dragon. Works quiet over this month so I should have more time to get to grips with things!

The good old Intamin transition snap, with a small pop of air.

If you like your arse to touch the seat at all, this ride isn't for you.

Going straight into the low-lying corner is so last year.

This ride will become the next in my "Creatures" series, which are based on mythical, fictional and real monsters. As a follow up to The Red Dragon, this little sister ride will take it's theme from a welsh legend of the Afanc(pronounced a-van-k), or Addanc (pronounced a-than-k). A creature that dwells in a lake and preys on anyone who enters it. It is describes as being a mix between a beaver, crocodile and dwarf.

I've made progress on supporting (I over supported it an had to readjust the first half of the ride after carefully analyzing the real mega-lites), and I've also got a color I quite like. I've had to ditch a lot of ideas I had to begin with, but they were a little ambitious, and I want the ride to present in the right fashion, I really like the layout and I want to see it shine.

Anyway, onto a screen. The logo/name aren't exactly finalised yet but I wanted to show some form of progress here. This is the s-bend after the first corner.

You know how Intamin track connects directly to the footer when it's close to the ground? So imagine it being part of the track segment.

I've got some really bad news guys. In an attempt to make me leave the house quickly for a night out, my mate turned my computer off at the main switch. He must've done this when the ride was saving because if I try and open it now I just get a "could not load track" message. I didn't send it to anyone, nor did I make an extra file.

Luckily I still have the newton file, but it means starting over! urgh..

Ok, after starting again from the newton file, I've managed to build the ride up again! I actually prefer it too, it's alot easier to do when you have a clear idea of where your going with it. I'm about 70% done with supporting now.

I have the ride pretty much how I want it, still got a few things to do. I expect to upload it on Sunday February 20th

For the time being, here's a couple of pictures.

An overview of the ride

My computer's dying atm though, can't handle video editing very well.

Background

This is the little sister ride to The Red Dragon, taking inspiration from welsh mythology. The afanc was a monstrous creature that, like most lake monsters, was said to prey upon any foolish enough to fall into or swim in its lake. Said to dwell in the lake, Llyn Barfog in North Wales, it has been described as looking like a beaver, crocodile and a dwarf.

Ride Design

This Intamin mega-lite takes it's inspiration from the existing layout, but also the likes or Rita and Intimidator 305. It was an experiment in air-time, I wanted the riders to either be flying off their seats or being pummeled into them. The preserve the natural setting of the ride, it only has two visible poits from outside the ride area and the rest of the ride remains hidden.

Notes

You need trackpackager to ride

This ride was created using Newton 2

Big thanks for Ed and Andre for testing.

Really, really liked this.

The trackwork was fantastic, very smooth and pump free and the support work was good too. The layout was good, I liked the combination of hardcore ejector and the forceful corners and also some of the fast transitions. The pacing was good too. My ONLY criticism is that I wanted it to keep going! Seriously though, another set of hills and corners (nothing much more) would have made this pretty perfect. It felt a little short.

But honestly I'm just finding fault for the sake of it, it's a great ride. Good job! 9/10

^Agreed. Twas a bit short.. but overall I found very little I wouldn't love about riding this ride. Win. <3

Well now...

BT: I can say you've gotten pretty damn good at Newton 2, although there were a couple hills that felt newton'd to me. Overall, a very flowing and very Intamin-like pacing. Supports I felt were true to Intamin, although on some of the bi-rail sections I thought it was just slightly overkill- nothing to fret over. Not much else to comment on, colors went well together. Would like to eventually see one of your creations gone "all out" if you know what I mean...

A: A great, fun, quick paced ride, felt more like a Mega-Lite than most of the mega's out there. Would have liked to see more interactions with itself than what was present, as I feel that's what really defines a ML, but not going to downrate because of that. I felt that some of the transitions could have benefited from having a quicker snap, like the first snap hill.

O: Overall, a great ride, with plenty of originality built in. Sometimes, things are better when they are shorter, and this ride was one of those.

8.5/10

I know exactly what you mean, I always have a lot of ideas. Maybe on my next ride. People expect alot from NL these days, just a layout doesn't really cut it anymore.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it though, I really appreciate the feedback.

Rating from NL-exchange:

Technical : 9.20, Adrenaline : 7.50, Originality : 7.00, Average : 7.90

T - Very smooth ride, shaping was good, forces were in check. Supporting was also great. Very solid ride in terms of building technique.

A - What it did was quite thrilling, but I thought you could have put so much more into this. With a top speed of 62mph, I feel you could have made it more exciting and much longer. With a ride like this, I don't think it is good to cut it shorter when you could have done a lot more. The layout itself was good with the airtime hills and turns, but it just seemed to be lacking.

O - It was quite original, but it didn't stand out like most of your rides. The order of elements was definitely unique, but it didn't have anything that would make me remember it.

Overall great ride, but doesn't stand out as much as some of your others.
