Enthusiast Traditions/Rituals/OCDs?

Jarrett

Most Obnoxious Member 2016
Do you have any recurring behaviors you like to do when you go theme parking? Either because you just like to keep this behavior the same for nostalgic reasons (tradition/ritual) or because it will legitimately bother you if you don't do this (OCD)?

I've got a few...

*Gooniform- This is the one I'm probably most known for. Whenever I go theme parking, I always make sure to deck myself out in theme park merchandise. I always have a t-shirt, an unbuttoned button-down thrown over it (likely color-coordinated to an extent), one of my infamous hats, and sometimes a bag. I also have a CoasterForce wristband, two Kings Island rubber bracelets, and my Coaster Crew lanyard I like to experiment with. I also have a few pins I use to hold the collars to my button-downs down, sometimes this also helps hold a lanyard on. I know other enthusiasts wear stuff from parks to parks, but I do it pretty religiously.

Ride Banshee First- Unless I'm with somebody who wants to do differently, my first ride at Kings Island is always Banshee. This is without a doubt my most-ridden coaster, with 115 rides on it under my belt.

Watch the Announcement Video Before Riding- If I'm excited to ride a coaster, I always watch the ride's announcement video right before going to ride it. Right before I left for Carowinds this summer, I made sure to watch the Fury 325 announcement video they showed in Harmony Hall via the live stream, and before I rode Skyrush a month later, I watched the bad NoLimits video Hershey put out when it was announced. After waiting a while to ride a coaster, I feel this helps drum up the excitement through the roof as the time to get on and ride draws near.

Not Drinking **** Beer- I cannot, repeat, CANNOT drink **** beer after a day of credding about. At the CoasterForce Live back in August, I remember specifically leaving the Coaster Crew event the day before and heading on over to the cabin to be greeted by a game of beer pong. I'd been up since five that morning and it was ~2 am the day after, and as much fun as I had Cedar Pointing about with my Coaster Crew friends, I was beat. When Snoo and I got started on a new round, I ended up having to drink our first cup of Bud Light. I literally put it to my mouth, swallowed it, and just told them that their free beer, "tastes like **** ." I can't do **** beer after I get back from a park. My evenings on the Penn trip were spent in slightly sketchy hotels trolling social media with Ramen noodles and Stella Artois for this reason.

I can't be the only one with my goony traditions over here! What kinds of obsessive behaviors do you engage in when being a goon?

I've had a tendency to ride the new stuff first, and no trip to SFGAm is complete without a backseat ride on Viper.

Also, you can't go to SFGAm Fright Fest without going on Terror Twister II.

I don't really have any tradition but I do like to attend the opening day for new UK rides. Not necessarily to ride it but to watch the doe-hard enthusiasts run towards the ride to be first! Always makes me laugh to see the token fat, sweaty kid with red cheeks puffing in the queue line a step closer to a heart attack.

No theme park visit is complete for me without consumption of at least one ice cream.

^A shirt that fastens with buttons, as opposed to...err, zips?! Velcro?

Lol, so just a shirt then? I have literally never heard that before! XD

I have a specific 'theme park bag' which is practical and leaves me hands free. I also can't ride anything at Alton until I've been on RMT. I hope I never have a trip where it's broken down..

^^No, at least for rational fashion. God knows what the fashion industry is up to now.

Otherwise, we have jackets, which I've seen both zippers and Velcro used.

Jordan, "button-down" refers to (at least in the States) a shirt that fastens with buttons as said above. Think the (usually) plaid shirts I wear unbuttoned over my goon shirts in my usual getup.

There was me, thinking button-down shirts really just meant shirts with buttons on the collar tips, you know to hold down the collar with a button - not really a shirt with buttons down the front, which is, you know, more like just a shirt. But hey, what do I know?

My OCD thing at parks is just constantly checking that the crap I have in my pockets is still in my pockets, which of course it is most of the time - especially since I now try to have shorts with pockets with zips on them (they are great).

The first thing I do when I get to a park is get a couple of maps, one to look at and read throughout the day and one to take home. Always have to come away with some merchandise as well, a t-shirt, mug or even just a fridge magnet.

I've always worn a goon shirt & my Pikachu hat at parks since I've had them. I also buy a new shirt for whatever I considered the best ride I went on (that I don't already own one for).

Not really. Only thing I do on a regular basis with roller coasters is undo the seatbelt in the brake run, and the seatbelt of any empty seats next to me, but I'd hardly consider that a ritual.

I always wear the same bag to all the theme parks I visit! I feel lost without my bag at a theme park, never wear it outside a park though, I also have to buy a pin badge of a ride or park logo and attach it to the strap on the bag.

Sometimes, if I see that the seat next to me is not going to be filled with any single riders, I tend to do those harnesses/belts myself. A bit OCD, yeah, but that's my inner ride-op coming through...Hitting interval is not only a matter of good ride-ops but also cooperative patrons!

When going to a new park, I will always go for the coasters (even the ones for kids) before I move onto the other major rides (be it dark rides, flat rides, etc.) Water rides always come last for me and I will only ride them if they look substantial or there's literally nothing else to ride/reride.

I only buy coaster ORPs.

Oh, I also put a plastic shopping bag over my belongings when putting them in the bins. It works to prevent stealing, I don't know how, but it does.
