The World's Greatest Theme Park™ Efteling has banned guests from wearing storybook, fairy tale etc character costumes at their park. This so guests not in fancy dress can distinguish between guests and authentic characters.
To avoid confusion amongst visitors, people coming to the Efteling dressed as characters from fairytales, for example, will be refused entry from now on. The professional execution of costumes and makeup these days, even by amateurs, could cause ‘normal’ visitors to confuse these other visitors as paid Efteling actors, the park spokesperson, Femke van Es, says.

Cosplayers, or people dressing up as characters from movies, books or video games, gather in groups at the Efteling several times a year, Van Es says. “They look so professional that they are confused with our own entertainment. That’s why we tell those people that they cannot come inside if they come to the Efteling dressed like that.”

The cosplayers themselves are calling this new measure from the Efteling ‘discrimination’, according to De Telegraaf.

Of course, dressing up to go to the Efteling is not a new concept. Kids have been dressing up like princesses and pirates since the park opened. Van Es reassures Efteling visitors that kids have nothing to fear. “No, of course it’s no problem if they come as prince or princess”, Van Es emphasizes.

Interesting. I didn't realize cosplaying at a theme park was a thing. Does this happen often, or at any other parks?

Tends to happen at parks with popular IPs. Disney (and Universal?) have banned it in all of their parks. Disney do allow kids under 14 to dress up and have selected dates (usually Halloween) where adults can join in too. To be honest, I'd never heard of people doing it at Efteling before.

The reason the parks ban dressing up is that if the cosplayers do or say something to other guests which wouldn't be ok with management, guests will just think it's bad park staff and will gain a poor rep.

We were told that Magic Kingdom banned anybody from being in the park in costume, even during their Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, they didn't stop anybody in reality and there was some incredibly detailed and authentic looking costumes when we were there.

I understand this ruling, we don't allow anybody come to any of our shows dressed in horror costumes, merely for the fact of safety towards other guests in the parks. As much as 'bad customer service' comes into it with other guests confusing customers as staff, it's mostly with safety that the ruling is put out there.

Disney changed the ruling on this a few years ago. They put up signs all over backstage areas saying things like "everyone deserves to feel like a princess... 5 or 50" as long as they don't have a facial mask on OR are taking photos with guests. Anyone can now dress up at WDW.
