Northern California 2009

Hyper Poster
I went up to Northern California from 7/29/09 - 8/1/09 for quick visits to Gilroy Gardens, CGA, and SFDK. I've been to each of the parks before and had all my credits at each of the parks, except for Tony Hawk's Big Spin which I decided to ride even though I have motion sickness.

I know there have been a lot of trip reports from these parks in all of the West Coast Trip threads on TPR, so I'll try to keep this short.

Part 1 - Gilroy Gardens.

Gilroy Gardens is an amazing park; I can't compare it to any other park I've been to. I wouldn't say it is one of my favorites, just because it's hard to spend more than an hour at the park, but I always enjoy the place and it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Here is your view entering the park.
P1011271.jpg

Ooooh
P1011334.jpg

Ahhhh
P1011278.jpg

This is probably my favorite part of the park.
P1011285.jpg

Is that a Wacky Worm I see?
P1011287.jpg

Awww...nevermind.
P1011291.jpg

If you look to the right you can see a waterfall.
P1011292.jpg

If you look to the left you can see the spinning boat ride of death.
P1011297.jpg

Gave some really great views.

Quicksilver Express!
P1011321.jpg

P1011320.jpg

I used to love this ride when I was scared of bigger coasters, I even rode it 13 times in one day.
P1011349.jpg

Didn't bother this visit.
P1011296.jpg

P1011336.jpg

K, I officially love this park.
P1011338.jpg

I'm not stalking you.
P1011330.jpg

A cool tree.
P1011342.jpg

An interesting tree.
P1011329.jpg

Trees.
P1011365.jpg

Banana Split.
P1011363.jpg

What? What's so weird about a banana shaped pirate ship flat ride?
P1011366.jpg

"They're everywhere..."

And that's all for GG. I took a lot more pictures, but like I said before, most of this has been posted in the last month. I guess I either need to get quicker at posting my PTRs, or avoid going where TPR goes every year!

CGA is next.

Looks like a pretty park. That apple core ride looks awesome.

Nice report, that park looks pretty scenic. It looks like one of those parks where you could just take it easy and relax compared to the more larger parks.

Part 2 - California's Great America.

This was my third visit to the park, and really, it's not a bad park! People like to think of it as a just horribly-run and gross park, like SFKK (and SFA and La Ronde I've heard) but it's actually really nice. Really the only downside to the park is the coaster collection. Flight Deck, by far the park's best coaster (which doesn't say much, but it is good) was closed during the visit, leaving only Demon, Grizzly, and Vortex for me to ride. The park actually has a pretty nice flat ride collection, including one of my favorite Drop Towers...Drop Tower. It'd be really sad to see this park sold or taken down, because it could be a great park with just a few more rides.

P1011571.jpg

Pshhh, that was like, so yesterday.
P1011568.jpg

Best shot I could get of the entrance, it's always crowded!
P1011567.jpg

Too bad carousel's make me sick...
P1011385-1.jpg

See? Nice grass. This park is good.
P1011507-1.jpg

That's a...nice sign there.
P1011540-1.jpg

Vortex actually has some force.
P1011544-1.jpg

But that doesn't mean it's good.
P1011554.jpg

This corkscrew was fun to take pictures of.
P1011550.jpg

P1011555.jpg

P1011537-1.jpg

Flight Deck...
P1011528-1.jpg

...Closed
P1011532-1.jpg

I remember this part being really forceful.
P1011530-1.jpg

P1011536.jpg

P1011504-1.jpg

Over to the other side of the park...
P1011491.jpg

We have the rough-but-could-be-fun-but-it-isn't-cause-it's-rough Demon.
P1011478-1.jpg

Invertigo
P1011467-1.jpg

Which is my 126th favorite roller coaster.
P1011462-1.jpg

Out of 126.
P1011468-1.jpg

P1011503-1.jpg

Are they stuck? Oh wait that's until a couple weeks later...in the future.

P1011429.jpg

Then there's Grizzly...
P1011457-1.jpg

Which is so rough/boring it's fun.
P1011423-1.jpg

Okay...nevermind what I just said. Except for the rough/boring part.
P1011412-1.jpg

Oh boy!...We're next!
P1011427-1.jpg

Best ride in the park! Rode it 6 times.
P1011439.jpg

I like KI's Drop Tower more because it's taller and faster, but for some reason CGA's felt more "powerful".
P1011456-1.jpg

It is a Psycho Mouse.
P1011453-1.jpg

P1011445-1.jpg

I saw this...and went inside.
P1011447-1.jpg

These were in there...funny.
P1011420-1.jpg

Lonely?
P1011419.jpg

Come join the party over here!
P1011433-1.jpg

P1011444.jpg

I think this is the most popular ride in the park.
P1011455-1.jpg

A broken flat.
P1011499-1.jpg

The park lake.
P1011506.jpg

You know you're bored at an amusement park when...
P1011515-1.jpg

...you go see Scooby Doo on ice.
P1011518-1.jpg

A lot of empty space around the park.
P1011431-1.jpg

Hi there.

P1011564.jpg

The Sky Tower...or was it the Star Tower...can't remember the name.
P1011380-1.jpg

What? You don't see the GCI?
P1011378-1-1.jpg

P1011377-1-1.jpg

P1011403-1.jpg

Didn't go to Boomerang Bay this time. Only thing worth riding is Down Under Thunder.

That's all for CGA.

SFDK next.

Part 3 - Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

My 4th visit to this park and it seems like every visit gets better! This park is amazing, and my favorite SF park. It is exactly what SF parks should/are trying be like; clean and family friendly. There are some really good shows too, and the coaster collection isn't bad at all.

P1011813.jpg

Never got to go when it was Marine World...no Zonga for me. :(
P1011810.jpg

My 125th credit. This coaster is definitely in my Top 120.
P1011786.jpg

Moving on to a coaster in my Top 15...
P1011597.jpg

Medusa was great! A lot better than I remembered it.
P1011649.jpg

Smooth...fun...re-ridable...un-original...no, I did not just mean to describe B&M.
P1011637.jpg

Pre-lift
P1011616.jpg

I don't know why I rode Kong...especially since I already had the credit...and a re-ride...and a ride on it's terrible cousin in Kentucky...
P1011640.jpg

Oh right I remember...I used to like it! Well not like it...but not hate it. It was in my Top 30 when my count was 70, so I guess it was okay.
P1011652.jpg

It sucked, but it's still a lot better than T2.
P1011651.jpg

P1011615.jpg

Overbanked turn is fun though.
P1011653.jpg

An overview of Kong...from the ground.
P1011741.jpg

Didn't bother riding Boomerang after Kong.
P1011694.jpg

But I do remember it being a lot better than KBF's Boomerang-with-Arrow-trains-POS.
P1011674.jpg

The cobra roll (or is it called a 'boomerang' on a boomerang coaster?) goes right over the path.
P1011742.jpg

P1011743.jpg

P1011670.jpg

Reflection shot fail.
P1011680.jpg

This rapids is one of the best I've been on!
P1011696.jpg

It's fast-paced, there's two waterfalls (one which half of the raft actually goes in) and after several turns and random ways of getting wet, you get SHOT with the water guns. And yeah...I know I used the wrong picture to describe this.
P1011700.jpg

SOAKED.

But...sorry SFDK, I just have to take a moment to show how much better Disney is than Six Flags (even if this is a SFDK TR).
P1011698.jpg

Here is SFDK's water.
P1011220.jpg

And here is Disney's. Notice any difference? And if you're thinking SFDK's looks like chocolate milk, I agree.

P1011722.jpg

Roar was good.
P1011787.jpg

Not as good as my night ride in December though.
P1011782.jpg

V2 disappointed me.
P1011783.jpg

Twas once a Top 5 coaster...
P1011713.jpg

P1011733.jpg

Ahhh, so SFDK has M&M stairs too.
P1011737.jpg

P1011746.jpg

OVERRATED. I was really looking forward to this, and I kept waiting for something to happen, but it was simply just talking about the tigers and feeding them...
P1011692.jpg

P1011747.jpg

UNDERRATED. I didn't even know about this show. It's great, a definite must if you visit SFDK.
P1011757.jpg

P1011758.jpg

P1011760.jpg

P1011761.jpg

P1011730.jpg

You were lame.
P1011687.jpg

Butterfly house
P1011629.jpg

P1011628.jpg

P1011625.jpg

Since when are waves colorful?
P1011579.jpg

Skyline from the parking lot.
P1011814.jpg

The lake

That's all for this report, thanks for reading!

Amazing. You made me chuckle quite a few times. The parks look quite good, though I doubt I'll ever visit them. Still, nice to read about them, though!

Already looking forward to your next Trip Report!

Vortex is HORRIBLE! </3

I agree with you about Discovery Kingdom, it's awsome, although it ruins my life that you don't like V2 as much as you used to, I thought it was fab!
