Record Breaking Rollercoaster Coming to Six Flags Great America in 2014
Fastest Wooden Roller Coaster with Steepest and Tallest Drop on the Planet

Gurnee, Ill. — August 29, 2013 — /PRNewswire/ — Get ready for the new GIANT in the world of wooden roller coasters! Six Flags Great America announced plans for the next addition to its arsenal of world-class rides with an all-new wooden roller coaster. New for 2014, Goliath will be the fastest wooden roller coaster in the world and feature the world’s tallest and steepest drop. All total, this wooden marvel will tout three world records making it the most extreme coaster of its kind on the planet!

“Six Flags Great America is known for introducing record-breaking and first-of-its-kind roller coasters,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America park president. “Goliath will be unmatched – setting not only one, but three world records and featuring two inversions. All of the ride elements, including an 85 degree plunge down the tallest drop on a wooden roller coaster, make Goliath the most extreme wooden roller coaster in the world. We are thrilled to bring this record-smashing coaster to our guests for the 2014 season.”

Goliath takes riders up a mammoth 165 foot lift hill, then plunges them down a record-setting 180 foot, 85 degree drop, crowning it the tallest and steepest drop on a wooden roller coaster in the world. Riders will gain record-breaking speeds of up to 72 miles-per-hour and blast into jaw-dropping maneuvers including three over-banked turns, a 180 degree zero G roll, an inverted drop and an inverted zero G stall. Goliath completely annihilates the wooden roller coaster competition.

Record Breaking Facts

Fastest wooden roller coaster – 72 miles-per-hour
Tallest drop on a wooden roller coaster – 180 feet
Steepest drop on a roller coaster – 85 degrees

Goliath will make its home in the County Fair section of the park. Construction begins this fall and Goliath is scheduled to open spring of 2014.

The drop = <3

The layout looks interesting. Still not sure about these hybrid woodies, will need to get myself to America to try them out. :)

It looks awful... An upside down airtime hill?

Ew, so much ew...
Don't worry - RMC has a tendency to do these things.

If it's anything like Outlaw Runs wave turn it will be a unique sensation all to it's own.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

That second inversion looks weird...

Not sure why they have to rename the dive loop to "180 degree zero g roll and a inverted drop"

Oh, and yet another Six Flags coaster named Goliath.

Other than that, looks great :p

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

Shame it's quite short and only has one airtime hill, but it still looks awesome

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

RMC just went full retard and that is not a bad thing.

Holy **** that looks amazing. Cry all you want Brits, but if this was going over there it would be the biggest fap fest ever. Not sure about the second inversion, lookss just insane.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

To be honest the renders don't have me all that excited. The layout and some of the elements look kind of awkward. It also looks kinda short.

However, I have to admit that I felt the same way when Outlaw Run was announced. It wasn't until I saw the real video of OR that I realized how insane and fast that thing looked. Then the glowing reviews came in and I decided I had to make a trip to Branson. That trip is this weekend, and I am stoked to finally ride it.

So, here's hoping OR measures up the the hype, and the Goliath measures up to OR.

This. When I first saw Outlaw, I thought meh.. short.. doesn't do much. When I first saw this.. thought the same thing. Of course, we don't always get gems like OR, so we will see.

As far as the name.. SIX FLAGS USE YOUR GOD DAMN IMAGINATION.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

I like the modern take on the "Cyclone" layout with this design.

Looks to have a lot of airtime and tight transitions, which is what made Outlaw Run for me. I will be interested to see how those inversions work out - especially the dive loop.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

So much win!

This looks like so much fun. That first over-banked turn and that hang-time inversion really take the cake IMHO.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

What in the **** is this!?

Seriously three years ago would any of us have believed we'd be seeing woodies with multiple inversions let alone dive loops.

Insane. Step up Europe, I want to try one of these.

You know they perfected trans-Atlantic flights, right? We've moved on from Amelia.

Years ago though would we have thought they would be trying to pass off a steal coaster as wood?

Yes it looks great but as said before this to me is not a wooden coaster. It has a wood frame yes but the track is totally steal and the trains are secured to it a steal coaster train would be.

Anyway just my view as a purest :)

Fair point. Would have been better to refer to them as hybrids I guess.

Re: SF Great America | "Goliath" | RMC Woodie

^^ I'm no expert, but I do believe that the Topper Track system uses stacked wood as the base of the running rails. Only the top layers of wood are replaced with steel.

Also, I believe wood coaster trains (with a few exceptions) run with wheels on top of, on the side of, and underneath the rails.

RMC is looking to branch into Europe. According to their head man, they were looking to get some stunners out there to show off to the boys across the pond. If Goliath pans out to be good, they'll have more then enough to make some people excited and want to build these.

Technically, all coasters are steel if you base it off of what the track runs on. :D

As far as the track itself, the only difference is the amount of steel used. Instead of a narrow strip, its the whole top. The support system for the track is still all wood, just as it would be on a normally woodie.. and having ridden both topper and iron horse, you can definitely tell the differences and the feel is much more wood then you would think.
