Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

This is going to need some serious thinking about...
Until then, I'll post the first couple to come into my head. Ignore the annoying woman at the start of the first...

Bloody hell, I'd forgotten how ridiculously emotional that gets from 1:56 in...

Also, an honorable mention:

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

Electric guitar riff: Its not amazing, but Prayer Of The Refugee - Rise Against...
Electric guitar solo: Afterlife - Avenged Sevenfold

Bass riff: LOVERBOY - YOU ME AT SIX.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

This is really hard for me to whittle it down since pretty much every song I listen to has awesomely heavy riffs and air-guitar worthy solos, but I'll give it a shot...

- Best guitar solo: THAT beast of a solo in 'Raining Blood' by Slayer. Every respectable music fan should know it, metalhead or not!
- Best riff: The introductory riff of 'Slanderous' by Machine Head. Epic way to start off a song.

-Favourite solo: Hmm, this one's a tough call between the finishing solo of 'Forever' by In This Moment and the one in 'A Place Where You Belong' by Bullet For My Valentine.
- Favourite riff: Easy! The intro and verse riff of 'Perfect Insanity' by Disturbed.

Oh and if we're gonna bring bass solos into it, it'd have to be Murderface's solo. Dethklok may be an animated parody band in the show Metalocalypse but they still rock!

Honourable mentions go out to Funeral For A Friend (still my favourite band), Otep and Chevelle.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

OMG hermen lee is lyk da best guitarist ever! he's all DODDLDODLDOLDODLDODLDODLDODLDODLDODLDWAAAAAH!

And that was a 14 year old kim... *ashamed*

Personally, I don't really care about individual parts or what evs. The Guilty Gear soundtrack's are awesome though.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

I have a friend who did this guitar riff and put it on youtube. He says its one of his favorite guitar solos.

Anyway, thats all I can really say in this thread

Basically every note of that album deserves a mention, to the fair - there's brilliant solos in Slanderous, Halo, Wolves, Farewell to Arms and... pretty much every other track. Awesome stuff.
I'm slightly saddened that In This Moment got a mention though, but I'm going to play that track now, just to make sure I hate it :p

EDIT: Yeah, instrumentally it's decent, but the incongruous singer just leaves them unlistentable. I really hope someone got shot for that one. It's not like she's even hot...

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

^Well it's unfortunate that you don't have the ability I have to block out the words and only focus on the music! To be honest, I don't mind her voice, there's much worse (and at least it's not auto-tuned to death to the point of sounding like a robot, which seems to be 'in' nowadays...). Then again, I like a lot of weird things so my opinion is probably void...but it's not like I listen to certain bands to impress people! In fact it can be fun to wind people up with music you know they'll hate :B

Since it's a solo, I just have to mention the whistling solo at the end of 'Danger Line' by Avenged Sevenfold. Cracks me up every time and it probably shouldn't because it's a serious song...

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

But everyone loves whistling solos! Bizarrely, I'd never noticed that, so I'm having to play the song for research, though I'm BORED of arguing about Avenged Sevenfold after the last month.
Besides, an opinion's never void; it can only be wrong

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

The part in November Rain and yes you might laugh but Money for Nothing at the start.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

I've got a very narrow music range that doesn't touch very much epic guitar stuff. But anyway, for riffs, Muse has it covered. Hysteria and Plug in Baby have amazing opening riffs. I've only really got one "epic guitar solo" band in my music collection and that's Pink Floyd (provided of course by David Gilmour). Not the most technically intricate soloist ever, but they always feel really atmospheric. Favourite one is probably out of Comfortably Numb.

Was just about to say that's probably my favourite solo. In fact, it's the only solo I can actually really remember off the top of my head. Not being a guitarist, I'm more after how it makes me feel, rather than how technically accomplished/difficult it is to perform :)

Favourite riff is possibly "Friends" by Led Zep, but I also adore Mosquito Song by Queens of the Stone Age. Both show my secret love for folk based music

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

*Best Guitar Solo = "Stream of Consciousness" by Dream Theatre (would put it 2nd under best riff as well)

*Best Guitar Riff = "Soothsayer " by Buckethead

*Favourite Solo = "American Capitalist" by Five Finger Death Punch (there are literally tons of ones I'd like to put here but as of now this is my favourite

*Favourite Riff = "4 Words (to Choke Upon)" by Bullet For My Valentine

If we're bringing Dire Straits into this, then it's all about Brothers In Arms <3

The main riff in here's pretty special as well, but it would be insulting to mention Iron Maiden without bringing Hallowed Be Thy Name into the equation!

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

This will keeping changing for ever but at the moment it's either Sweet child of mine or November rain by Guns 'n' Roses.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

Daft Punk - Aerodynamic for my favourite guitar solo :p

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

Didn't know so many people like Dream Theater on here! :) I prefer heart and soul into a solo, not 200 bpm shredding, which can either be pretty cool or down-right grating.

Anyway... My favourite solo: (skip to around 11:00, I nearly cried at this solo, it's a good 5-6 minutes long, but it was by far the best gig I've ever been too!)

My favourite riff: (It's an unusual one I know, and not the catchiest, it's normally the simplest of things proove best to the ear.)

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

My favourite guitar riff is Waterfall by The Stone Roses.

My favourite guitar solo is Exogenesis symphony part 1: Overture by Muse. Comes in at around 03.28. Hearing that at Wembley stadium was something quite spectacular.

Re: The Best / Your Favourite Guitar Solo & Riffs Of All Tim

I don't think I could place my finger on any specific riff to be honest. Iron Maiden especially have a few epic ones. I think my favourite Maiden riff would be Hallowed Be Thy Name, or possibly The Trooper. They both have epic riffs!

As for a good guitar solo, one of my favourite solos has always been in Tears Don't Fall by Bullet For My Valentine. Or possibly Master Of Puppets? It's a tough choice!
