Cedar Point | "GateKeeper" | B&M Wingrider

Re: Cedar Point | "Gatekeeper" | B&M Wingrider *UPDATE PAGE

Why are people saying "this defo will/won't/might be in my top 5/10/15/20 (delete as appropriate)? It's only just been announced! You can't judge a ride until you've ridden it, and proof of that is in Leviathan. Seriously guys, it's only just been offically announced...

Anyway, I'm glad we could see the tail end of the ride after the MCBR. Such a shame that after it the ride doesn't seem to do anything but maze back to the station.

This technically breaks tallest inversion since the drop after the roll is at 164 feet :3

Oh really? Because I'm pretty sure you were saying how trash Leviathan was before you rode it so I don't see how this is any different? All I meant was I'm really happy they're getting it and I think it's a good addition, I'm just not pissing myself with excitement because B&M coasters like this aren't really my thing. I did really like Raptor though so we'll see. NOBODY can look at a rendering and not pass judgment, sorry Ciall, you're not perfect either.

Erm, that's exactly the point I'm making Taylor. Except with Leviathan I didn't judge it at all until testing... A few of us (including myself) took a look at Leviathan and went "meh", and when we rode it were blown away by it...

BINGO! No, you're NOT the only one.

Agreed. Seems more like an end-course brake run then a couple/few unremarkable turns before heading into the final brake run.

Jerry and I are working together to get the video of the public announcement and media Q&A up, but in the mean time, here are some photos of the event!

Wow. Disaster Transport is, well... certainly a disaster now

Re: Cedar Point | "Gatekeeper" | B&M Wingrider *UPDATE PAGE

Sucks seeing coasters getting torn apart, I didn't really like DT but it still pains me to see a ride being ruthlessly torn apart like that. Make way for progress, since Cedar Point really doesn't give a hoot about its history.

On the contrary, history is a prime principle of Cedar Point. Need you not forget the auctions they did for the last ride of Disaster Transport. This is only after having celebrated Magnum's 20th birthday with a similar ride event, and Gemini's 25th birthday banners.

Some more examples; Cedar Point named their new water ride after their original Shoot the Rapids ride, relocated Demon Drop and Ocean Motion instead of tearing them down, prefer to hire executives who worked at the park as teenager, and features a rides grave yard during Halloweekends that still features the Schwabinchen lady (HAWT!).

Cedar Point absolutely cares about its history, and readily shows that given the opportunity.

You must not however mistake progress with lack of nostalgia. Every ride at the park today, every coaster I have grown up with, was a replacement for a previous ride.

Take Raptor for example - a staple ride to any Cedar Point lover.

It replaced the Mill Race - the very first Arrow log flume ever built on the planet, and my own first water ride.

While it still holds a dear place in my heart, every ride, like the Mill Race, has a shelf life. As President Hildebrandt mentioned today, it isn't an issue of nostalgia - everyone has their own special ride. It is simply a realization that in order for there to be new rides, you must be able to move on from other ones.

My only complaint about the ride is the lack of Gargoyles. The front coach looks a bit like one and the logo is accented with them, but that's it. If this were built at a Busch park, the station would probably resemble a Gothic cathedral. Can't have everything though.

You'd be very surprised at what an amusement park can pull out of their hat in terms of theming. They may just have a cathedral for a station, or maybe even a garden with gothic art spread around. Personally I would love to see stained glass used in the station or at some point during the queue, that would just make my experience with the ride (even if it somehow kills me).

Alright I think I sprayed enough sunshine in this post :drinking: don't get me wrong it's still possible, I haven't seen them show anything on the station or queue yet!

EDIT: just looked at the rendering videos again, scratch the station references

Re: Cedar Point | "Gatekeeper" | B&M Wingrider *UPDATE PAGE

However we were throwing around a hypothesis that Iron Dragon's old gargoyle which mysteriously disappeared this year might make a reappearance with GateKeeper.

Complete heresay that in no way counts as true theming - but a guy can still dream.

In all seriousness, Cedar Point R&D is still working through the logistics of what trees to remove, station placing, etc. It was even up in the air on whether both keyholes would be on the first zero-g vs. one for the first and one for the second. So there is potential for a gargoyle-like station.

Don't hold your breath on extensive theming, that won't happen. But details can change last minute.

Re: Cedar Point | "Gatekeeper" | B&M Wingrider *UPDATE PAGE

^I really hope they keep the keyholes the way they are. The one-two-three triple keyhole on X-Flight is one of the coolest things I have ever experienced on a roller coaster.

So.

I'm of the opinion that a ride can be incredible and that a park can be wonderful and enjoyable without extensive theming. I certainly appreciate the level of detail at Busch and Universal and Disney, and I think it does add something to the experience, but I've never seen that as a necessary component.

To be honest, I think a ride that met the Internet roller coaster community's standards of "good theming" would feel completely wrong and out of place at Cedar Point, the same way a Cedar Fair standard coaster would feel wrong and out of place at a Busch park. Cedar Point's central purpose isn't immersion, it's diversion.

So what's wrong with the name/theme/logo/whatever of this coaster? I can't really see anything. Gatekeeper. Sure, I get it. It's a bit obvious, maybe, but it's also spot-on. In fifteen years, no one is going to think anything of it. It's just going to be another Cedar Point roller coaster along with Raptor, Gemini, and Top Thrill Dragster (speaking of names that are ACTUALLY not very good). And the theme? I'd much rather just enjoy the beach breeze and the already spectacular view of Lake Erie while I wait than be subjected to a half-baked storyline and walk through a fake cathedral. The ride itself is going to be the same either way. If I were at Busch Gardens, yes, I would want the theming. But I'm not, I'm at Cedar Point. So why should I worry about it?

Also props to Cedar Point for only claiming the real records, length and drop, as Wild Eagle is taller and Baco is faster.
Cedar Point will have the fastest, Baco is a launch coaster with an adapted train (Wingrider and Baco is the only one in excistance) B&M are Wing Coasters so GateKeeper will be the fastest of the type, to be honest I hate it when two different types get tagged together like this case.

Back to GateKeepeer I am not really bothered about theming, it's the layout that counts for me.
