What's new

Christmas #1

I think the "X-Factor is strangling the music industry" thing is really due to the fact it doesn't encourage original artists.

You don't need to be anything other than a competent karaoke singer to get to number one. Forget about song writing, the ability to play an instrument (or program a tune one up, or mix one) or any real musical ability.

I'm shocked you don't realise this Mark, as somebody who has written their own songs and is trying to make it. You could have just gone on X-Factor and had a number one, based on the merits of the original songwriter, Simon Cowell and a bunch of people re-producing other peoples work.

Oh I totally get it. I am writing my own material and so on but if it was what the mass public wanted, I would be famous already perhaps?. All it takes is for a few people to hear a song and love it and pass it on to their friends and they do the same until it all snowballs. To the point where I wouldn't need major label backing perhaps? This has not happened yet and may never happen. This doesn' deter me of course and I will keep plugging away at it, working on it at a pace where I can just enjoy it.

I don't do X Factor (even though soooo many people keep telling me to try) because of the contractual restrictions in which they place you under, both throughout the run on the show and for a while after. They are beyond excessively harsh and it just wouldn't mesh well with what I want to achieve and create as an artist. GRanted, it may be worth adding that if I were in the show this year and I went out before idiots like Jedward I would have been infuriated.

I play the piano (not wonderfully) and I can chain together a song so yeah, maybe I do deserve it more to hit the big time but in the same breathe, there are people out there who are far better singers so why shouldnt they get a shot too?

In terms of reality shows, perhaps the BBC should consider bringing back Fame Academy... a much more well thought out show. They put each contestant through their paces a lot more. They had to take songwriting, dance, vocal, public relations and all sorts of "classes" making up the weekday show and then an xfactor style sing off on the weekend. Unfortunately the show didn't last long as it had to compete with Pop Idol and its far bigger names....

My main point here is that I neither hate nor love the show. It is a part of the music industry that in some ways has been very helpful. Emerging "artists" helping re-introduce older artists to a modern audience. Yeah sure it dominates the charts... for 1 week of the year.
My issue here is mainly that all this campaign is doing is adding fuel to the fire and referring people back to X Factor, giving it even more publicity and so on to the point where, in essence, the campaign is a back-fire.

I totally agree with Pierre when he says...
As long as it isn't RatM... their over-obsession campaign with making it number 1 makes me hate it. Anyone else who releases a song intentionally for Xmas #1 and makes it is fine, but to be number 1 just to spite somebody, lol childishhhh

I actually loved Fame Academy, as it did what I think these shows should do. It got people with real talent, and worked them hard to refine their talents. They made it on their own merits.

There are a lot of very good singers out there. A lot of very good musicians. It's not enough though. Being good at "a job", is very different to being talented. I'm sure a lot of the X-Factor people will make good session singers, stage artists, etc. It doesn't mean that they have enough talent to really make it - I doubt very much the people who run the shows want them to have it either - they need somebody they can package, sell and control. Too good and they'll struggle to do that.

Lots of people as well as Pierre said:

The thing is, it's not just to spite somebody. I haven't bought the song to spite Simon Cowell, or Joe.

I've bought it because 20 years ago, I stopped listening to the charts when it became full of manufactured bands - artificially placed. It's had a couple of high points since, but mostly, it's just been "the public will listen and like what we say". This is one reason why sales of singles has dropped so much.

Will I buy a single that I like? Yes, I will actually. I like KITN, but I'm not keen on anything else RATM have done. It's the perfect "single" purchase for me. Would I have bought it otherwise? No, probably not.

So why buy it now? Because I know that buying it now, I finally get a chance to say "actually, I would buy singles if singles released represented music I want to listen to" - remember, I do actually have a wide music taste, it's not all just yelling and loud guitars.

I've also bought The Muppets, as I'd prefer to see that at number one. I think it's a good "skit", and I like The Muppets :) It's another song that I would like to support, for exactly the same reason as RatM - I like it, and it gives me a chance to buy music I enjoy (for whatever reason) and have it shown as a representation in the UK charts. I think it's a shame that The Muppets campaign has been overshadowed to be honest :(

So, it's not spite, I'm just enjoying the charts in the same way "everyone else" enjoys them week in, week out -year in, year out. I'm buying a song I like, given mass exposure in exactly the same way other chart songs are all the time. It's not hypocritical, spiteful or even ironic - it's just beiong given the chance to do what other people take for granted :)

I've been struggling with this all week Vadge :)

I loved the idea of both this, and The Muppet campaign, but couldn't work out my motivation.

After going through a huge range of thoughts on it all, I've come to the conclusion - it's because it's fun to join in jumping on a bandwagon (lol).

I'm not a spiteful person, I'm not doing this to hurt Joe (as much as I disagree with his fast-track fame). I don't give a stuff about Simon Cowell, he's going to make more and get more exposure out of this. It's great charities are getting something, but it's not a motivator for me (I give money from my salary to personally chosen charities each month anyway). I like KITN, but already have an "iffy" copy from the 90's (though this does make me feel better actually buying it  ).

So all in, I'm just doing it for personal enjoyment. I can't actually argue any further than I think it's good fun. It's a bit of a poke at the whole X-Factor thing, yes, and that's part of the fun. It's not malicious though.

It's not like:
1. Joe is going to sell less.
2. Cowell is going to make less
3. X-Factor won't make a big issue about it next year (it will work in their favour next year - I'll bet Cowell has a cover of a Rage song as next years hit).
4. Anyone is getting less exposure (everyone is getting more).
5. Charities are being done out of cash (especially Shelter at an important time of the year).
6. Anyone is actually getting hurt in any way, shape or form.

So why not have a dig at X-Factor? Why not have a week of fun at nobody's expense? It's a bit of a giggle :)

RATM are now only 8,300 copies ahead.

Looks like Joe will win (due to phsycial CD copies) unless people start buying multiple copies of RATM.

A word of warning for anyone thinking of doing this - the OCC can tell when people are buying multiple copies of the same download, and they will discount the sales.

Cheers for that, crumpet features.

Does that including buying from a variety of sources? (iTunes, Amazon, HMV etc)

I've never bought multiple copies of the same track before. Not that I will buy extra copies of this tune, I have one, that's enough! The song sounds terrible to me now, but only slightly better than Joe.
I'd also like to point out that the "And now you do what they told ya" can easily be changed to "And now I play with my todger" much to the amusement of your work colleagues.

You can buy one copy from several sources - they will all count.

You can buy up to 3 (I think!) physical copies in one go, they will all count. Buy more than that in one go and it ignores all the sales.

What you can't do is download the same track from the same service provider several times, I think it'll let you have it two or maybe three times but after that they mark it as dodgy and ignore the sales.

Emmett - Even if you are Simon Cowell - Universal thought they could get round Chart Hyping rules (where a record co buys its own artists singles to push it up the chart) buy downloading it multiple times, thinking the OCC wouldn't track download sales. The OCC did, the artist was disqualified from the charts and that ended up being the nail in their coffin. I can't remember if Universal got a fine or just a slap on the wrist, but the whole company ended up looking stupid and it put everyone else on their guard.

Cheers Sara for that. Good to know that someone is on the look out. It just goes to show that the figures cant be messed around with.

Even if RATM don't make it to number 1, I still thinking it's an amazing massive **** off to the x factor.

Deadline for buying singles is midnight tonight. They're still neck and neck, but sounds like Joe is creeping into the lead. Make your vote count... buy your favourite today!

I've bought RATM, because I do actually like the song and didn't own it, and also because I hate The X-Factor.

One thing that has really pissed me off about the whole thing is that pretentious little **** Joe, he seems to be of the impression that RATM have re-released the record to spite him, like he's THAT famous already.

He was also quoted to have said 'what is this, how can people even listen to this, it's just shouting!' Now this really got my back up! How dare he, the snotty little git who has just released a cover of a Miley Cyrus song, think he's so high and mighty to insult music that has actually had effort put into it and is original! It really annoyed me, as a 'musician' he should respect artists from every genre, whether they be to his taste or not. ****er.

QFT

I didn't buy it but I agree that the X Factor shouldn't hijack the christmas no. 1. Personally I would've preferred the Muppets, but never mind.

Just saw this comment posted on Madonnas twitter page and it made me chuckle...

Joe will win...and if he doesn't, won't it be a good feeling that RATM can only get Number1 with a massive campaign not coz of talent!

I don't like RATM song...it just isn't my thing.

People are ignoring the fact that these campaigns to hijack the Xmas number one via facebook have been going on since FB was made. Last year it was Rick Astley...this year RATM.

Personally, I agree that X factor winners shouldn't expect to get the Xmas number one...but if there is going to be a contender for Xmas number one other other than X Factor, please make it a ****ing Xmas song...
