Out of interest, why is it that they went with a Russian gas company in the first place? With BF being in Iceland, surely an Icelandic gas company would have been more fitting?
I guess Gazprom could have offered a very compelling business proposition to Europa at the time…
Gazprom pays good money, plain and simple. Also, while the sponsorship has always been controversial, it was until very recently perfectly in line with German energy policy, which is why they didn't have to be too afraid of backlash. To cut it extremely short and oversimplify it, this whole EU-taxonomy debacle, in which natural gas and nuclear were supposed to be labeled as green energy sources is part of a deal between France and Germany, where Germany is willing to accept nuclear as green, as long as France will not oppose the green label for natural gas, since Germany remains heavily dependent on it (mostly because the past 4 governments have done a very bad job at the transition towards renewables).
