Gardaland | Oblivion: The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Well, it's... a good laugh, at least?

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

I think it's an amazing name tbh. I don't care too much about originality - remember when we all moaned when they came up with names like Rita and Th13teen? I quite like the nod towards Alton Towers' X Sector. It's almost like Gardaland is taking the piss out of Alton and is saying we can beat you at being Merlin's #1 park.

This does ironically highlight why Cedar Fair copyrights a good chunk of their ride names and logos.

A very silly, silly name.

You're aware that Merlin own both Alton Towers and Gardaland right? Making your point irrelevant?

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Yeah, I kinda agree with Ian. If you've got an original, non IP, powerful brand concept that has remained successful for 15 years, it makes sense to transfer it to a similar who'll be unfamiliar with the success of the original. Their attempt to ride if Nemesis' "success" with Inferno was odd because it was too close and people just thought, and still do, it is a clone.

Why isn't it called "Oblivion - Il Buco Nero"?

Or just Oblio - Il Buco Nero... But this is Merlin, they're British and as ignorant as I imagine their board to be, they probably didn't even think that there are quite a few people who will know nothing with what the name has do to with.
Meh... Disappointed to say the least. I hoped for some originality (since most, if not all, of their attractions are still themed with originality). :/

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Oblivion is a great coaster name. A newer dive coaster with the same name is going to be interesting to compare to the original.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Hahaha this news has made my day...I don't even understand why

I suppose we don't complain when Six Flags call similar rides 'Superman' do we? And at the end of the day Gardaland and Alton Towers are both Merlin parks.

I really like the name 'Oblivion', I just find this really rather funny :p (and unexpected to be fair).

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

I honestly don't see what the fuss is about.

Merlin is a business after all, and from a business standpoint it makes plenty sense to reuse an - as aforementioned - successful theme and name.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

^ However, do park-goers at Gardaland even get the reference to Alton Towers' Oblivion? If not, you are not tapping into a brand, as it is non-existent.

No, I wasn't aware, which does make more sense.

There are two obviously lines of thought: Use the same brand across parks and roller coasters, or not.

I do prefer novelty in the naming, color scheme, theming of a ride. It simply helps add an element of originality and newness.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

^ I highly doubt it. Some do know about it, but these are mostly enthusiasts like you and me. But when it comes down to GP, I guess that very few to none actually know about it (that's the biggest difference to Six Flags' branding).
For example, if I'd go around, asking people whether they know about AT and its rides, I can imagine very few positive answers to my questions (I guess that Slovenian GP is quite similar to that, which visits Gardaland).

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Hmm. Interesting choice from Merlin there and it's one of hell of a mouthful isn't it?
'Do you want to ride Oblivion The Black Hole? I mean Nemesis Inferno has a bit of a ring to it, but I can imagine the GP being blissfully unaware of the 'black hole' part.

Oblivion is a good name though, and as said above, it won't seem out of place to 99% of its audience, plus it ties in well with the theme of the wormhole, or whatever the vaguely scientific theme is.

In fact, I quite like the way the project has turned out...a solid investment for the park, and a sign that Merlin have perhaps moved on from their 'paint it black' monotony days. If the theming and general ambiance of the ride area is as good as Raptor's (which I'm sure it will with its position on the hill), I'd just be switching between the two (and Magic Mountain) for some wonderful night rides.

Who cares about the name anyway...most of us enthusiasts will just give it a horrendous nickname regardless...'Blivvie Jr. anyone?

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

^ Probably be "Oblivio" whilst shaking your hand with a pinched thumb and index finger.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

ObliviNo.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

Hahaha! Teaming the name of an iconic coaster with a mediocre one that hasn't operated for 10 years, from the same park area! I love it! What'll be next at Gardaland? Nemesis: The Thunder Looper?

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

^ No, it'll be "Rita's Revenge"

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

The "Oblivion" name should stir up interesting reactions from Alton Towers fanboys. But Gardaland is run by the same chain as Alton Towers.

I am not referring to it as a 'brand', but merely a theme that was successful and worked well at Alton Towers.
Off course, most Gardaland visitors won't have a clue that it's been used before.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

It is a brand, just a different kind of brand than something like an IP. Tussaud's created a powerful brand from Oblivion - I'm certain by fluke. All good concepts are obvious ones that just work. Oblivion has always had the best merchandise at Alton because its the easiest to merchandise. I think reusing it at Gardaland is perfectly fine. I'd much rather that than an external, irrelevant and outdated IP or arguably worse a poor original concept, like Thirteen or Rita.

I find the fact that parks are still buying dive machines despite their... Outdated gimmicks and lack of evolution, far stranger.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

I'm totally with Joey on this one. Oblivion is a brand, as much as Nemesis is also. The naming of their coaster means absolutely nothing to the ride experience or the PR it will receive. So those moaning enthusiasts who probably won't even bother to go to Gardaland to ride it can sit down, be quiet and have a fist shuffle over Blackpool and Thorpe.

Re: Gardaland | Oblivion - The Black Hole | B&M Dive Coaster

^ Except that's the thing - is something a brand if the name has nothing to do with the ride experience or increased perception/PR? As mentioned before - are park goers at Gardaland going to retort, "That roller coaster is named Oblivion, just like the one at Alton Towers. It must be good!" or rather "Questo montagne russe si chiama Oblivion, proprio come quello di Alton Towers. Deve essere buono!"

Nemesis Inferno did experience Nemesis branding as visitors to Thorpe have a much greater knowledge of Nemesis at Alton. I don't think Gardaland's Oblivion is a branding move, but rather a reusing-of-name exercise. (Or else Northern Italians are more well traveled to Staffordshire than I'm lead to believe)

This is something closer to what Cedar Fair has exhibited, (Or Six Flags with DC Comic-themed names for random rides). White Water Landing was the name of a log flume at CP and a splash boats ride at Dorney. Dominator is the name of an S&S shot tower at Dorney, and roller coaster at KD. These names are shared between rides not for branding purpose, but because they are simply names on hand that are catchy enough for a roller coaster.

But I still ask - FFS Merlin, you couldn't think up another name or logo!?
