This might come across as a completly stupid question, but its been bugging me for a while.
What are the nets for on certain rides? Are they simply decorative or are they actually there for a reason?

Rush has them:

Incredible hulk has one (Very bottom of the picture):

And weirdly Colossus at thorpe park as a metal cage under its barel rolls but only under a certain bit?
Why is that?

Because thoughs are usually the areas people drop things from rides, especially on inverting rides and swinging rides.

Don't be silly Ben - those nets are up in the air. There aren't any flying fish in Thorpe park are there?

Ohhhh really? Ahhh that does make abit of sence.
What about the colossus cage then under the barel rolls? Its in such a specific place, surly that little bit is the most likley place for things to fall out?

Plus that part of the ride doesn't have any strong forces to keep stuff pinned inside your pockets.

I almost actually really did PMSL at that - nice Barry!

Erm, yes - they're a H&S measure to protect people from potential falling objects off the ride. Though they fail at stopping the rides from falling to bits :)
