Mike Singleton, programmer. I know games programmers may not class as highly as others, but Singleton was massively ahead of his time. Carrier Command and Midwinter are probably the two first ever open world "sandbox" games released (and considering Carrier Command was on the Spectrum, that's impressive).
His early works were all very highly regarded (I loved Lords of Midnight) too. It's a little like losing Stanley Kubrick, so yeah, notable
