What's new

"Now Showing"

Yahh I'm badass for making a double post.

Black Christmas (the newer one)

Far fetched, pretty much your average slasher with a Christmas theme thrown in there.. So uh, yah, definitely not the best horror movie but it made for mindless entertainment, so whatever.

5/10

Saw Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs last night.

Very pretty, nice use of 3D, but new technology doesn't help it escape the usual feature-length animation problems - shallow writing with tonal and character inconsistencies aplenty.

Plus points for not shying away from the surreality of it all though, and Steve the monkey was great - will have to see if the dog from Up is better :p.

It's been high up on my list for a loo-oong time, though s'not got a release date over here yet, if at all.

When I'm more conscious, I'll post a (fuller) review for District 9. In short: I really liked it.

Just started my Film course at Uni, so far have watched:

La Jetee
Basically it's a series of stills narrated over so it seems like a movie. It is very strange, with a cyclic narrative, bit of a head **** really. It's really old and in black and white and you can see where lots of sci-fi movies have taken ideas from. I won't tell you what happens because it will spoil it but it's definitely worth a watch.

12 Monkeys
I find the only form of sci-fi I am able to watch are those directed by the fantastic Terry Gilliam. Accompanied by the amazing performances from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, this film had me astounded. Not to mention the amazing sets of the dystopic past, present and future. This film again is another head **** and was watched shortly after La Jetee so we could make comparisons etc. Excellent work.

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion
The lecturers said that this film had a lot to do with 'culture' but I think they lie. It was OK, typical chick flick I guess and I'm generally not into that. The dance scenes are amazing though.

Recently got back from the cinema to see The invention of lying.

It is Ricky Gervais's first time co writing and co directing a film...it shows. It has its extremely funny moments (most of which are shown in the trailer...sad faces all round) but there are too many moments where it goes stale like milk that has been left in a student flat for a year for a drunken experiment. So yeah, stale moments = fail film making. It is a shame but I suppose overall the film is watchable, but it just needed to be shorter to give the funny moments more of a punch rather than fading into a rather desperate well of attempted (and failed) storyline plot hole cover-ups.

Rating: 2/5 ... shame

Mighty Joe Young.
Still really like this film. Worth watching.
That's all I can be bothered to say really. :p

I finally got around to watching Bruno.

I almost cracked a smile a couple of times, but, apart from that, I kinda, sorta, really hated it.

While on the bus going to Wichita Falls we had a choice of 3 movies. Dark Knight (what I wanted), Ratatouille, and Series of Unfortunate events. Unfortunately it wasn't Dark Knight so it could only be....

Ratatouille

I actually found it to be quite alright, not as good as I heard but for a kids type movie it wasn't all that great. So overall 7.5/10 Very average to me.

So the parents come home with kids...MOVIE TIME.

Myself, Peter, and the cousin Danny all went to see Zombieland.

How good was it?

You should be punished for not seeing it.

There is not 5 minutes that you are laughing your ass off. It's not only well written, but original, clever, and stays true to it all. Hell, COASTERS are in this movie! Not awesome ones, but still. Effects are realistic and the situations are as well.

Overall, spend the $8 to get in, and have a ****ing good time!
10/10

Ive not seen it.. but something tells me that when i do.. the word "original" wont be in my vocabularly to describe it.

Quarantine:
I've not been too bothered about seeing this as Rec is one of my favourite films I've ever seen and I didn't wanted it ruined by some crappy American remake because they suck at coming up with their own ideas.
Anyway I finally decided to watch it. It was actually alright. Rec is still better by far but some of the bits in Quarantine were done slightly better. The beginning bit in the fire station had more too it and felt more real. And the added bits such as the broken leg and the scene with the dog and the lifts were really good. Apart from that Rec kicks is ass. Rec has a much more gritty and dark feel to it while Quarantine feels more shiny. The acting is good in both but the Angela in Rec is much better and more believable as in this film it feels like the woman playing Angela is going over the top with her screaming that it becomes annoying and you just want to kill her yourself.
The relationship between Angela and the cameraman was better in this than in Rec with him trying to calm her down when she starts panicking and helping her. But unlike Rec where you don't see Pablo (the cameraman) fully at all in the film (which makes it better for some reason) here you see the cameraman several times which is slightly annoying.

Overall the film was ok I guess. It would thrill those Americans who can't be assed to see the original because they hate subtitles. But Rec is still better by a clear mile. Quarantine tried to add a bit more by changing things slightly. But I'd much rather they left an amazing horror movie alone and came up with their own ideas.
Still Rec 2 comes out soon and I can't wait to see it as it's been getting good reviews and has been quoted as one of the best horror movie sequels in the last decade. :)

Quarantine gets a 6/10 from me. Purely because it's a remake of an amazing film and not as good as Rec.

It does look really good though, and I think I'll probably go and see it next week or the week after.. Because Toy Story in 3D is out and I have to see that too!

Ollie I was gonna watch Quarantine the other day but then I didn't. I just heard it's a crappier version of Rec anyway, and Rec isn't a top tenner for me so I didn't bother.

Im gonna go get drunk and watch trailer park boys tonight...

Its a film which is crying out to be watched in the cinema with mates after a few beers.

I highly doubt everything you just said. Sounds like Shawn of the Dead without the comedy or soul. Has been ripped to shreds by reviewers over here, who do actualy know what they are on about. The fact is America has pretty much lots the ability to make comedy. Ok, occasionaly things like The Hangover pop up, but mostly it's dire. What happened to the days of Airplane!

I think the fact that Holy Grail is the most popular Monty Python film over there proves it. It is the silier and more obvious one, while the smarter, less obvious and the one that actualy deals with an important issue is the most popular over here.

@Blaze.. Come on..

America did give us the hilarious Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Ben Stiller.. And lets not forget.. Friends!

.. erm...

After it's recent re-release in the cinema, this evening me and my flatmates went to the late night showing :)lol:) of Toy Story. We're all just big kids really!

I'm still laughing my head off from all the adult humour and the nostalgia that enveloped Pixar's first of many masterpieces which are now the stuff of big screen legend!

A few others seemed to have the same idea as we had, the whole cinema was empty other than about 20 or so students, all of whom laughing their heads off at the genius of Mr Lasseter and his devoted team.

It's timeless and wonderful, and I couldn't believe that I'd forgotten how good it was! Unbelievable! :p
