"Now Showing"

The Strangers.

I wanted to see this when it first came out at the cinemas, but failed to do so. Anyway, I got it on DVD last night, and henceforth watched it.

I really loved it. I like how the villians are so mysterious, you never see thier faces, you have no idea why they do this, or if they planned it in advance. You only hear two of them speak, and it gives nothing away.

There were some geniunely scary moments, I won't divulge them here and spoil it for you. But if you're expecting another let down slasher horror, go buy something else.

It does take a while to get into the film, and since the couple have had a tiff, there isn't much fluent dialogue, and although this could be portrayed as rather boring, it actually gave anotehr level to the film, and could be percieved as a separate genre.

It's an intense experience, and I do love the way it's directed.

The music doesn't give away with what is going to happen(Ie. a crescendo before something bad). The music that is used is a lovely juxtraposition with what is going on screen, watch it to find out what I mean.

In summary, a good solid film, that is definately worth watching if you like suspense/horror/thriller.

I rate it 9/10.

^ Strangers was definitely scary. It had some of the scariest costumes I've ever seen, anyway!

Yep. The masks are terrifying. For me, it's because you don't know what they're thinking, weather they're enjoying it, hating it, and it means I have to use my imagination, and sometimes, I think that's scarier than cliche scares.

^ I agree.. Which again, is why I like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity. They don't show the creature, they play more off the viewer's own imagination and thoughts.

Exactly!

If Paranormal is being marketed as the new Blair Witch should I see it even though Blair Witch was absolutely ****? It certainly looks interesting but it's meant to build up really slowly apparently and you don't see much.
Also I found the Strangers boring. I really wanted to like it but I didn't jump or feel creeped out by it at all and found it all rather silly. Shame really.

^ Did anyone read my review on here of PA? Obviously not. Ollie, don't go back and read it because it might contain spoilers, but essentially, movies don't ever scare me to the point of not being able to sleep in my own bed. Not since I was like, six anyway. It doesn't show the demon or anything, and it's not "scary", but it's creepy as hell, especially if you believe in Paranormal stuff. I found it better than Blair Witch, but to have the full effect, go see it in the movie theatre.

To UK users, the film 'Kidulthood' is currently on the BBC iPlayer. I heartily recommend it, for it is good.

Paranormaal activity was ok nothing to rave about i think it really depends on which ending you saw to be honest the origional ending of the film from 2 years ago was rubish the new ending i far better but overall the film just lacked and it ruined it for me as you know when anything is going to happen as soon as you hear the stupid low bass hum in the background so its not as much impact as it just happening so id give it about 5/10 for effort

My final thoughts on this film can be summed up in two words...

TOO SHORT...

Ahem...

Overall this film looks amazing, especially with the proportions of the characters with the buildings, and the attention to detail on not only the stitching but also the various mechanical parts seen elsewhere...

Indeed, it is a very beautiful film, and I liken it to Wall.e, but without the amazing cuteness and more adult based...

Unfortunately time is an issue, with only 79 minutes running time, a lot of it seems rushed, not excessively but there were times where the story could've been padded out more, characters and friendships from the secondary characters could've been shown, more back-story to the current situation could've been shown, even with the cliche it had...

The action sequences were good, although there was one that suffered from the 'fitting into time' issue, where it seemed they thought of the quickest way to do it and then move on...

It needed to be longer to pad out the story and maybe make the situation more compelling, and fleshing out the characters a lot more than they did...

Apart from that, great film and will defo be getting it on DVD...

8/10

Battlefield Earth
I didn't go to watch this sci-fi epic at the cinema because everyone said it was a dog. So I wated for DVD release, but forgot about it, as everyone said ti was a dog.

It was on TV the other night, so I recorded it. It wasn't a dog at all! It was a mangy, flea ridden corpse of a dog.

I'd go into exactly why it was so awful, but if you've seen it, you know. If you haven't seen it, anything I say may make you intrigued and want to watch it - I shall save you an hour and a half of your life by not saying any more.

Not even a rating.

Oh, go on then, 3/10 but only because it didn't resort to showing naked flesh in an attempt to make it in the slightest bit interesting.

We saw This is It at the weekend.

This film is only for MJ fans, simple. If you are not a fan you are never going to enjoy it.

It is well put together and shows that he could still dance and could still sing. The concerts would have been amazing had they gone ahead.

Some parts did make me upset but thats mainly due to the fact that he is dead and this footage was the last.

So for a MJ fan its a must really, I do think though it could have waited for a DVD but whatever.

I wont rate it as a film, it is not a film in my view.

After recieving some free tickets to see the Polo Timeless Filmm Festival, I voted to watch 'Love Actually' as my favourite all time 'love' film out of the selection they had. However, the Telford cinema's choice was Mamma Mia, which I found out won while at the cinema about a minute before it begun.

I hadn't seen it, so decided to stay. And it was not my cup of tea at all. It was:
1) A musical
2) Very VERY camp
3) Very VERY girly

This was not helped by the fact I won one of the very few men there, they had obviously been dragged by their partners.

Singing: There was lots. But the film is not my cup of tea really, and I struggle to see how it could be the most successful British film ever, the fastest selling UK DVD ever, best sold DVD of all time etc etc. Perhaps there was a sudden boom of depressed middle-aged women? :p

6.5/10

However, I did get a goody bag full of make-up, snack a jacks and moisturisers from it :D

Pretty much the entire female population and the gays.

From Hell:- I <3 the Jack the Ripper story. And period drama is also my cup of Earl Grey. But this film is really, really poor. Especially when considering that on paper, I should totally adore it.

It plods along. The deaths are all cop-outs. Depp has to do FAR too much carrying, even by his standards. Coltrane is amusing as always but as a whole it really does go nowhere. It doesn't even warrant the 18 certificate it has!

Perhaps there's a reason the Hughes Brothers never did anything like this ever again? Their direction is too wishy-washy and they've almost ruined for me something I adore.

At best a 4/10. But more realistically a high 2. Bad form.

Halloween (The original 1978 version).
Educating Minor_Furie in the films that made the clichés is fun. Halloween is cliché heaven.

I used to think it was a brilliant film, but that was 23 years ago and I was thirteen. Actually, I still don't think it's a bad film, but films have moved on a lot. So many things in it though that are quietly referenced in later movies (the remix of Don't Fear the Reaper in Scream for instance). Plus The Thing being the horror movie shown, which was Carpenter's next film.

I enjoyed it anyway, it wasn't massively scary, well acted or well directed, but it was... classic

8/10 if you love cheesy old horrors.

Snow White on BluRay is stunning.

They have done such a good job cleaning it up and sorting the sound out.

The special features on the 2nd disk are very good as well, they cover a lot of the history of Disney and some of the parks.
