"Now Showing"

Just got back from seeing In Time

Accidentally missed the first few minutes which I'm kinda annoyed about. It was very enjoyable and at times, quite tense. I really liked the cast, they did quite a good job. It wasn't amazing but it was a bit of good silly fun with lots of running around.

On a side note, I happened to see an interview with Timberlake about the film. He claimed that the only CGI/special effect in the film was the little cool clocks on their arms. I thought that was cool, and then I saw the last few shots of the film, obvious green screen was obvious (well to me anyways).

Night Of The Living Dead just because I stumbled across it on the PS3 - it's extremely silly and dated, and the live characters are mostly irritating, but then SUDDENLY it has an awesome last 15 minutes, thus a satisfactory end, may have to track down the sequel at some point.

I watched Dawn of the Dead with Minor_Furie a couple of weekends ago (did I post it in here? Probably not). It's still one of the best zombie films ever, utterly superb. I really love Day of the Dead too, but it's a much simpler social commentary than Dawn.

Make sure you watch the original though, not the awful remake.

Had a cinema day today. First up was The Ides of March.

It was fantastic, the cast were superb. I felt like there wasn't enough Paul Giamatti and Marisa Tomei but it was still great.

Then it was time for Contagion

Very depressing film but very good. The budget on the film must have been massive due to the massive cast. It felt like there was a silly amount of text telling you about the location etc at the beginning, especially as some of it was incorrect. However it is gripping if a little too slow at times. Also, has Jude Law always had that horrific front tooth? I found it really distracting in this film for some reason.

Then I watched The help.

Absolutely loved this film, a great feel-good story with a brilliant cast. Just really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.

Then I ended the day by watching The Adventures of Tintin: The secret of the unicorn (3D).

Fantastic family fare. Thoroughly enjoyed this from start till end, from the cool animated title sequence to the excessive set pieces. I thought that the style would really annoy me as it has done in other films but I thought it worked really, really well. The 3D was excellent too apart from the couple of dodgy "we're going to point something into the audience" shots, not a fan of those. Once again, really recommend you go see it.

Been watching more films. Last night I watched Brothers Bloom on blu-ray.

Still really love this quirky little film. It's all about Bang Bang though, she adds a nice humour to the whole film.

Rating: 4/5

Then today at the cinema I saw Machine gun preacher.

It's quite shocking to think it's all based on a real life story because it's quite bizarre and surreal and then really depressing. I think Gerald Butler is amazing in this and probably one of his better performances. It is quite a long film but it moves at a decent pace and is gripping throughout.

Rating: 4/5

Then watched Tower Heist

It was alright, most of the amusing bits were in the trailer. It's still enjoyable fare though but maybe one to wait for on DVD or TV.

Rating: 3/5

I then watched Tintin in 2D, still amazing.

I watched We Need To Talk About Kevin. I'd been looking forward to watching this for a while now, especially as Lynne Ramsey hasn't released much for a while, although I know she's been fighting to do films which have been somewhat destroyed by other directors... I have the book, but I'm yet to read it. But wow. Wow. The film is immaculately filmed, edited and the performances from all main cast are almost faultless. It's a very well crafted film, certainly not one for somebody who wants to chill on a Friday evening. Incredibly chilling and it has been playing on my mind since I went to see it. One of the best from 2011 so far.

8.5/10

I watched Spirited Away. I was in awe at the animation - it was simply beautiful. I've got a lot of Studio Ghibili films I've been wanting to watch for a while, but this topped the list. the story was bizarre at times and yet still sweet. It never got boring and it was very flowing. Just a beautifully made film.

8.5/10

Watched Twelve Monkeys. I'd been meaning to watch for a while, but kept putting off watching it. I have to say, it didn't meet my expectations. I was expecting more, and it didn't meet what I expected. It felt very 'average', which I know it isn't. Maybe I was just in the wrong frame of mind, but my mind was not blown and I do feel I need to rewatch it in a better mood.

7/10

I watched a film called Bedrooms and Hallways. It's a film about homosexuality and prejudices, but it's done in quite a warming and light-hearted way. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, and I really liked pretty much all of the characters, even if the performances of the cast were a bit over-the-top at times. It put a smile on my face :)

Saw some more films yesterday. Kicked off with The Rum Diary

Really been looking forward to this one. The trailers made it look fantastic and I really like the cast. Just a shame then that it was a bit dull with the odd moment of amusement/anything of interest. It was just such a let down and only just managed to keep me interested till the end.

Arthur Christmas in 2D

Really good family fun. Predictable? Yes, but lots of fun and the animation was pretty good. I couldn't believe the amount of amazing actors' names that came up at the end though, must have been good if I wasn't sitting there trying to figure out who was providing the voices.

Rating: 4/5

Watched The Help again too because it's amazing.

Tintin was epic. Everything is portrayed with a stunning realism, yet Hergé's style really shines through. Details such as characters' noses, head shape or hair are taken straight out from the comics, yet the character models are eerily realistic. It's all the time blatantly obvious that this is based on a comic, yet it's all extremely lifelike.

PotC has also got a contender for "most epic pirate battle scenes". And the chase scene in the Moroccan city is hands down the finest animated scene I've ever seen. I admit there are some flaws to the story telling (it appears as if Tintin pursues the "mystery", which is hardly defined before well into the movie, for seemingly no reason. A little broadening out here wouldn't hurt), but all in all, it's a great film.

Go watch it. I think even the hardcore Belgians recognise this as a brilliant adaption, true to the style of Hergé.

Watched Coraline again the other day. Reminded myself that it's such an AMAZING film. The animation is brilliant and it's such a good film. Really dark and scary for a family film. The soundtrack for it is fantastic as well.
Everyone should see it. :)

Re: "Now Showing"

^ I keep meaning to watch it. I read the book a while ago and thought it was pretty good for a kids' book. I'll get around to it at some point.

I want to read the book. Might ask for it for Christmas. The illustrations are really creepy. :p

Urgh, don't. Ollie is very wrong. Coraline was a total waste of time. Nic and I have been moaning at him over Twitter and Facebook today.

^And in that stupid poll Nic did, twice as many people said it was an amazing film over those which said it was **** so the majority rules. :p

"Now Showing"

Yeah ollie you should have posted it on Google as you would have got hundreds of replies. Not! Lol

I watched Star Wars on blueray all 6 films. The newer films look stunning, the older ones look out of this world the conversion was fantastic. He left them alone no new scenes or anything like that, shame there is no copy of the original versions.

The only the thing I did not like was in Return of the Jedi Darth Vader shouts out No No before he picks him up.

Was great to see the films again from start to finish. There are so many story flaws though with regard to the twins and how Ben trained Anikin.

Still good films the worst one is actually Jedi as its so slow until the last 30 mins.

He also added a comical "BONG" noise to the stormtrooper getting into the Death Star room Artoo and Threepio are locked in in A New Hope.

Also, ROTJ is dreadful because of the last 30 minutes. It's great until then :p

Yeah, I have them on Blueray, but I've only watched episodes 4 and 5 so far...

Tower Heist...

It was alright... a bit funny in places... that stunt with the gold car was cool. Other than that, totaly fotgettable.
