ORIGINAL TOPIC

Like reddude333, here is a topic where I'll show pics, vids and updates about my works on RCT3, past and present.

We begin with the project I was playing on before entering the duelling coaster contest.
It's a B&M terrain floorless name Chevreuse, taking place in a forest, its layout is already complete. No higher than 35 m or 115 ft, with a biggest drop of about 70 ft. I've been inspired by several famous coasters. The use of terrain and the unusual inversions order is a clear reference to Nemesis, while the numerous airtime hills used in this B&M floorless is due to my fondness for Intamin's megacoasters... There is even a slight influence from old-style Arrow megaloopers with a particular element !

Enough chatting, here are the apéritifs !

Re: portemine creations' page

image #3 almost made me shiver from its beauty. First glance it looked like two layers of inverted 90* banked helix circuits and then I saw it was a smooth airtime hill.

I myself enjoy building rollercoasters that relate to the geology. I prefer having random terrain and making the most of it than making my own. It banes me that Sandbox/Custom Scenario mode won't allow random geological formations. I've resorted to bastardising player-made scenarios. Currently mucking around with a RCT3 recreation of a RCT1 park I think known as 'Mega Park'.

You're the first person I've met whose work that includes custom supports don't look out-of-place.

I will eagerly watch this thread.

Re: portemine creations' page

scw55 Definitely the terrain emphasize the coaster's layout :)

In fact I think we have different approaches to terrain. You like randomness, I pay attention to the elevation of every single m² of terrain to make it look natural and random. I'd like to see how your style displays though !

A Chevreuse update will come during the middle of next week.

Before that, I'll look back at some of my older projects, make some comments about them : why I choose to show you this one ? significance for me ? influenced by / influences ?...

Ice World

Date : Late 2005
Type : Amusement Park
Fate : cancelled, file lost
Main interest : King Blizzard's Rapids, Main Freeze's Buildings

My view on Ice World
: I cannot believe I made something this beautiful back in 2005 ! Although I was never completed because it was too big for my computer, this park represents a milestone in my rct3 "career". Ice World was meant to be a "Disneyland in snow", and as a result, triggered sweeping changes in my style. Before that, my projects were most of the time parks containing 10+ coasters, with scenery which would look very basic to today's standards. Ice World began a trend of fondness for architecture, while neglecting (a bit) coaster layout and excitement. It also marks the birth of my distinct use of Steelworx for the buildings.

Re: portemine creations' page

I really like your blending of CS and in-game scenery. It's definitely something I like to do, but rarely will attempt both within the design of a single building. You seem to manage the combination very well and the final products turn out quite nicely.

Re: portemine creations' page

I tend to try and go for the 'natural' look myself. A lot of the rides in real life which I find visually impressive are the ones set in normal setting but something is significantly out of place (i.e. Nemesis).
When I build coasters I like them hugging the terrain and if they can carve into it, then it's even better. I like to soften where the coaster has cropped the terrain so eventually it appears that the Coaster and Terrain co-exists. They are meaningless without the other. That's my aim. The layouts I will always try and look 'smooth and graceful'. When it comes to twisted inversions and banked turns, I will always try and keep the direction of rotation consistent. I only break it if I have to or it's intentionally.

I envy your patience with creative scenery set pieces. I find your Ice World lovely but I would never have the enthusiasm to do it on that scale. I prefer doing little things in say a 4x4 or 6x6 area. Something small that can gradually and organically grow. I find when I do large set pieces that there's a lot of uninteresting barren areas. Perhaps I ought to investigate some CS that I actually like. What I want out of CS is CS that won't look out of place amongst default game models.

Re: portemine creations' page

scw55 I really love making terrain and coaster layout follow each other, definitely. I think we really agree then. Again, smoothness, realism, and a nice overall looks is what matters to me.

Having said that, I think I'm not that patient anymore with scenery. A project took me months before, now I rushed Compromise in only a week (though I'll probably update its look someday).

Sunday Candies

Date : 2008
Type : Shoot the Chute
Fate : Unfinished - file probably lost ...
Main interest : Laid foundation for Compromise's colorful theme

My view on Sunday Candies : It's actually the last project I published on the web (but not completed) before taking a 3 year 1/2 break, and it clearly influenced Compromise's theming. Sunday Candies was supposed to be about a crazy candy factory. In other words, Skjebnes meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory :) . Steelworx and Mouseworx plus HGR71 are utilized in an unusually colorful manner, like in Compromise. I now realize that Sunday Candies's atmosphere is far more elaborate and beautiful compared to the dueling - because it took me weeks or even months to do that. The weakness of Su Ca was its poor layout, and it's probably why I never felt brave enough to finish it. I intended to use this song for the POV that did not come (don't mind 240p, only the sound matters :p ) :

Incidently it's by Johnny Depp's wife Vanessa Paradis, another subtle reference to the Chocolate Factory, perhaps. I feel the song precisely conveyed a joyful and bright atmosphere.

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse new pics March 1st

Zero-G Barrel rolls over a ridge always looks nice :)

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse new pics March 1st

^Yes! I have used it before and it is a classy move. Definitely looking forward to this POV :)

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse new pics March 1st

POV probably coming tonight. Already began video editing though I'm still fixing a few details in-game.

But before that, what this inspires you ?

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse new pics March 1st

POV uploaded with a little delay

I am satisfied with the final result, having succeded in solving the few problems I faced making this vid. The coaster is very, very smooth and you cannot have a clue of the upcoming element most of the time :p

Haven't settled on a next project. Maybe a suspended. Something seldom seen in any event.

Honestly, who saw 0:40 coming ?

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

I envy your computer system being able to record panning shots without the frustrating stuttering fps lag.

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

I'd be surprised if there wasn't any lag when he's recording. Btw, portemine, you are using WMM for your vids right? I have had trouble with it and the AVI files from RCT3 for about a year or so...

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

What a great terrain coaster!

A very unique layout and I love the seemless inclusion of the batwing and the many other elements. Very well done! :--D

What are the ratings? (I'm sure that they're excellent)

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

scw55 : Really ? I seriously only use my regular laptop computer... As reddude said, I do experience some lag issues, and the game does slow down (a lot) when recording. However I use some tricks (or compromises) to make my PC run correctly, like keeping my park closed to peeps or not filming at night. I also cleaned my computer significantly to reduce lagging.

reddude : Correct, I use WMM. Nonetheless I don't understand your problem. :s My in-game vid from RCT3 are already in WMV format.

CoasterCrazy : Thanks man :) I don't have any ratings since the coaster is not available for download... yet.

IneiSe

Date : 2007
Type : Wild Mouse
Fate : Completed, download at http://battor.77.free.fr/compteur.php?id=963
Main interest : Peculiar use of Spaceworx

My first complete creation in this retrospective, at last ! IneiSe was a quickly-built side project to Skjebnes. As such, it has no significant terrain editing. In fact the coaster was a mere basic Wild Mouse... with futuristic theme :) It also utilizes CS a lot more than my other rides, though only well-known ones like MouseWorx, SpaceWorx and Steelworx.
The theming has aged moderately well in my opinion. Still it could provide me a helpful example for my next creation...

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

I have 4GB and I have issues with the in-game record speed. It put me off recording the second POV video for the duelling contest. It will put me off doing any videos at all.

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

^I have 8GB of RAM and an i7 processor and it is slow when I record too. It really has nothing to do with the specs of your computer. It has to do with that the game is taking a long time so as to render a very high quality video (technically it's HD). It is just something you have to deal with in recording.

^^I didn't used to have a problem with making videos in WMM but ever since about a year ago whenever I try to save a video in WMM that has RCT3 footage in it (regardless of the fact that it runs completely fine in WMM) the program says the files are corrupted. This only happens when I try to save them though...and it seems to happen on all computers I use so I think it has something to do with the format the files are saving as :-\

Re: portemine creations' page - Chevreuse POV March 4th !

Now for a preview of what comes next :

I found this style by chance, again. Looks really cool to me.
