Scary Moments with Restraints?

Waiting on the platform, I always see riders who can't get their restraints to work at first and they start to panic and call madly for help when they think the train might leave. Always, the restraints get figured out.

But have you ever experienced a ride in which your restraints weren't working in some way?

This week I was on my second ride on Rebel Yell and I had my hands raised and was trying to maximize my airtime, when suddenly I slipped halfway out the side of the lapbar. I'm sure the seatbelt would still have kept me secure, but one hip slid out, so I felt halfway out. Suffice it to say, I rode the rest of the ride with my hands holding the bar.

I'm sure some people here have experienced far, far worse than that. Examples anyone?

I think it might have been Megafobia at Oakwood but my restraint either slackened off a notch or just wasn't securely tight enough to me to be comfortable and I remember after the first few moments of the ride clinging on a little bit and just not feeling all that comfortable.

Nobody believes me because B&M have some sort of fail safe thing on their restraints but mine popped open a few clicks about halfway up the lift on Alpengeist. I pulled it down right away and it was fine but it definitely scared me.

Not really a restraint issue as such, but on Dinoconda I was thrown in such a way that both legs ended up on one side of the "hump" thing in the middle of the seat. Definitely s**t myself a bit.

Wow. Definitely one of the worst rides in the world to have something like that happen to you on. Looking at their restraints, I don't even see how that's possible, as the hump seems to connect straight to the OTSRs, doesn't it?

There's actually a bit of a gap. It doesn't look it depending on the angle of certain pictures though.

Not an issue with the restraints themselves but more of an issue with me leaving a fair few clicks on the lap bars on Colorado Adventure at Phantasialand. I love the airtime on the ride in the back row but the drop into the mine after the 2nd lift actually stood me up and took me way too far out of my seat for me to feel comfortable.

Oh just thought of my wonderful experience on Wild Mouse at Blackpool. Like a few people in this topic, it was not a malfunction but instead was just the way the ride threw me. I was riding on someone's lap and by the end of the ride I had been pushed so far down in the car that the belt that goes across was at my neck. Still a fab ride though.

A few occasion on our honeymoon to orlando in 2011.

First one being montu at bg. Was only running 1 train and I was waiting at the gate as I was on the next train. As the train I was waiting for went up the lift hill 1 of the restraints came undone and the train stopped.

Ok the safety systems done there jobs, but the restarint that came undone was to be my seat! Brilliant. Hence to say I was cacking it all the way round.

Another one was rip ride rocket. Just as we left the station and just about to go up the lift hill both our restraints came undone and we quickly had to lock them back in. The wife was not impressed and held the restarint really tight against her waist.

That was the last rollercoaster she went on that trip.

I have definitely had this experience -- I left a little room under the lapbar and then on the drops I found I was standing up.

This makes me wonder: when people speak of airtime -- say, floater air -- are they talking about the torso elongating giving the feeling of floating up, or are they actually talking about floating up above their seats?

I gave myself a little too much space on one of my rides on Colossos @Heide, ended up a good few feet higher than Neil on one of the large hills, absolutely **** myself and stapled myself for the rest of the ride.
I've never had an actual issue with a restraint, always work as intended.

@LiveForTheLaunch I had the exact same thing on Alpengeist. Somewhere near the start of the ride the restraint popped out into the next ratchet. Obviously still safe but that moment of feeling it open was a bit unnerving.

I've also shared @gavin's experience on Eejanaika, ending up with both legs over one side of the middle seat ridge. I kinda thought that was amazing though. I love the brutality!

Probably the worst restraint scare was my own fault. Riding with Big John in the back of Big Dipper a few years ago, I had so much space that I could pretty much stand up on the turnaround at the top of the lift. That drop was insane :D

Wow, what a coincidence. My only restraint scare was, in fact, on the Rebel Yell. This was sometime in the 90's. I was on the south train and my restraint unlocked on the little curve before the lift hill. I started hollering and then heard it lock again. Maybe it was just the ride operator messing with us, but it scared the hell outta me. That was before they had seat belts.

Me and my mate were on Ripsaw once. Colin his name is - he's a big lad...
Anyways, we started off as normal, did one rotation of the arms, with a spin at the top, then came back down to the load/unload position. 'Is that it?' we thought.
No, it wasn't it.
A ride op then approached the gondola, shuffled his way along to where we were sitting, then proceeded to give Big Col's restraint a hefty shove until it clicked. He and the ride op in the control cabin then exchanged a quick thumbs up, and off he shuffled again. Not a word!
The ride then proceeded to go about its usual routine.
Like, hellooooo? What was that all about??

I've really only had one 'scary' experience. On Raging Bull, the restraint came up about 2 clicks in the final helices. But I'm small so it really didn't matter.

There was one point on Banshee at the end of the ride that the restraints tightened so much that my balls hurt and I couldn't breathe.

My friend's asking me "Dude, wasn't that great?" and I reply back with a wheeze and a thumbs up.

A wheeze and a thumbs up? If that's something you enjoy, I think there are people you can pay to do that for you.

Wheeze because I couldn't breathe for several minutes and a thumbs up to make it seem like I'm okay.
