It's shocking how many people think roller coasters are powered by engines like automobiles.

I admit that I used to think that, probably because dragon flyer was one of the first "coasters" I rode.
Worked it out when I started playing RCT though.

I think some people like traditional, bumpy woodies. If all wooden coasters were made with topper there would be no point for wooden coasters at all IMO.

Bingo.

The reason to build a wooden coaster is because of its classic ride and feel, and offers a cheaper start up cost. The reason not to build a wooden coaster is because they require frequent maintenance.

The reason to build a steel coaster is because they offer a smoother ride than a wooden coaster, allowing for inversions and high speeds. The reason not to build a steel coaster is that there is more of an initial cost.

So, to build a topper, you are combining both concepts, resulting in a roller coaster that is smooth like a steel coaster, yet requires the constant maintenance of a wooden coaster.

If smoothness and speed are the goal, it is simply smarter to build a steel coaster to avoid the hassle of maintenance down the road.

Crunch the numbers over a 20 year life span, and I would imagine the advantages of a topper track style are outweighed by the benefits of simply building steel.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

What is the point of a smooth woodie? They're **** if they're smooth.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

^^ Would you really care if the new coaster was a steel one though? Would there be ANY form of talk about this ride beyond the point of "Meh, looks boring" if this were a steel coaster?

Wooden Coasters are still relatively primal. Outside of steep drops (Intamin Prefabs and RMC I-Track) and 90°+ banking (GG, RMC and finally GCI), nothing else has really been explored since SoB (which was a flop).

The only way SDC would have gotten any form of press that they are getting now would be to build the steepest and most inversions on a steel coaster (which would be far too costly).

To those arguing the "we want a traditional wooden coaster ride" point, there are still HUNDREDS of wooden coasters out there that still give you what you want. If you really dont like the fact that a Wooden Coaster has broken your view and opinion on how a wooden coaster should be built, then ignore the damn thread. Jesus.

Isn't El Toro (SFGADV) smooth?

Or Phoenix at Knoebels?

Sent while out and about

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

Heck, Evel Knievel/American Thunder is smooth. But it's my favorite woodie.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

My favorite woodie is either blue streak or wildcat (at hershey, don't know why so many people don't like it), and we all know both of those are smooth

But seriously, why do we need to argue over whether it's a true woodie or not??? the important part is whether or not the ride experience is good.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

I think people are confusing "rough" and "throws you about" again.

Yes El Toro is Smooth. It's pretty meh as well. Phoenix has a few rattles and the ability to throw you around and it's in Knoebels so it's allowed to be some what smooth. Knoebels is a silly place.

I don't really care what a Woodie does in regards to the layout. As long as it can bash you about a bit then it's doing fine in my eyes, I want to be hurt on a wooden coaster. What ever this ride is, if it's glass smooth like Toro it's going to lose enjoyability for me rather quickly if I ever ride it.

I say Boulderdash is over rated but it's a nice analogue to use in comparison to Toro, possibly all intamin prefabs and possibly these things as well and a larger amount of people have been on it than some others. It kept changing after every ride, it bashed about in different places, there was always something new each time. I like Unpredictability in a Woodie.

and personally "Rough" and "Throws you about" are synonymous :3.

One more thing, something about Skyrush.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

^so basically what you're saying is that you want more pain??? That makes no f***ing sense!

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

No, he wants the typical pain found on typical wooden coaster as the pain is a part of the experience.

Example being (and I hope this is a proper one of what I believe Kim is trying to say):

A wooden coaster wouldnt be the same if you werent put through the whole heavy laterals and bouncing around. You get onto one and brace yourself for a bumpy ride. If there werent any bouncing around or some laterals, it just wouldnt feel proper.

The 2013 site is saying I need an authentication ID and pass to see the countdown...?

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster

^ They're probably updating the site with the information ready for announcement.

Re: Silver Dollar City |"Outlaw Run"| Wooden Hybrid Coaster
