Sochi 2014 - Mens Ice Hockey

The US announced their men's and women's squads for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The men's team had a couple of surprises and snubs. The biggest names left off the roster were Bobby Ryan and Keith Yandle. An argument could be made that Oposko and Big Ben Bishop should have been on as well. Management has said they are going for chemistry over talent. Good luck.

My opinion is this team will need Ryan Miller to stand on his head, again, to even dream about a medal in 14.

Goalies: Miller - Quick - Howard
Defense: Suter - Martin - McDonaugh - Faulk - Fowler - Shattenkirk - Oprik - Carlson
Forwards: Kane - Parise - Kessler - Backes - Callahan - Pavelski - Brown - van Remsdyk - Stepan - Stastny - Paccoreity - Wheeler - Oshie

Top 4 prediction for the tourney:

Sweden
Czech Republic
Russia
Canada

Saad was a major snub, they could have put him and Kane on the third line to spread the wealth throughout the lineup and provide chemistry between the two.

Im guessing you are a Hawks fan. Saad is playing good but is probably 6th of 7th on the snub list. He should make the squad in 18 asuming nhlers go.

We are in a group with Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia. We will probably finish 3rd in group play and need a qualification win to move on.

^ Yep, Russia is the main favorite in this group, but I believe that the USA can beat Slovakia (they are good, but they are also kind of beatable). Our team is a total outsider here and every point would already mean a great deal for them.

Ah yes, Olympics Hockey. The one time the U.S. actually cares for the sport.

If then, even. You'd think that there would be one major sports network that covers the sport but **** ing zero.

Yes, I am a Hawks fan. Yes, I am biased. Yes, you can go kill a goat if you don't like it.

^The NHL shot themselves in the foot during the 04-05 lockout. They wanted to get NFL/MLB money and ESPN/ABC told them to **** off. Then, when East North South State vs The Holy Nuns Uni got better rating on a Tuesday night then the Wings - Hawks ESPN stuck with college basketball as filler.

NBC is a fairly large network and they are trying to expand their sports platform. But with ESPN, Fox, and CBS having little to no stake in the league they don't have any interest in covering the games. Why spend 60 seconds showing highlights to a hockey game that you get no revenue from when you can hype up some random bowl game you own the rights to?

Plus NBC has been airing the Stanley Cup finals on NBCSN. I understand for the earlier rounds, but the finals need to be on network TV. Since I don't have cable, I take it as NBC telling me not to watch some of the best hockey of the year.

All rosters are now submitted.

As usual Canada could easily field two teams that could medal. The list of snubs is 20 deep for the Canucks, but I think a lot of people feel Marty St. Louis should have been on this squad. He is STILL one of the top scorers in the league and if Stamkos plays there is instant chemistry there. He has been disregarded his whole career despite the fact when it is said and done he is going to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Canada has the exact opposite problem as the Yanks. They have scores of talent at forward and defense, but their goaltending is questionable. Price is playing great but has never won anything. Luongo won the gold in 10 but hasn't even been able to keep his starting gig the last few years. And Smith, who probably wont dress, is a little bit of both. I personally think Smitty is their best bet but I don't see him doing anything in Sochi other than watching from the press box.

"Sidney Crosby, who scored the gold-medal winner in 2010 against the U.S., will be joined up front by Jamie Benn, Patrice Bergeron, Jeff Carter, Matt Duchene, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Patrick Marleau, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews.

Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shea Weber will be on defense. The goaltenders are Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Mike Smith."

Rumor has it that Sweden's team is just going to wear Detroit Red Wings jerseys during the Olympics.

:p

Well, if the Checks end up playing for Silver it will be because they beat USA in next rd.

America surprised with a hard fought win vs Russia and a blowout of the Slovaks.

Shockingly, my original final 4 predication can still come threw (thru? through?) based on brackets. Hopefully USA continues to play well and makes me a fool. To do that they will have to get through the Checks/Slovaks and Canada, then either Sweden, Finland, or Russia again (imo). Not an easy road, but it is the Olympics so what do you expect.

Slovenia, the Cinderella story, beats Austria to advance to the final 8!

Russia is looking weak again, this time against powerhouse Norway. I fear for the lives of the Russian players if they choke today.
