What's new

Son of Beast to be dismantled for further development.

I love that video of them collapsing the section. It looks amazing!

I looks so odd, my first impression was that the video was sped up. Either way it's amazing how quickly they're tearing the sucker down.

Good riddance to bad rubbish in my opinion. Never got to ride it, but, it's not exactly like i'm judging a book by it's cover here. This is a ride that, it's book, every chapter is titled either "lawsuit, injury, maintenance downtime" or a combination of the three.

Why so many people are getting on the "this sucks, why are they tearing it down" bandwagon is beyond me, especially considering that many of these people are the same people who called for it's very demise.

Meh, at least it's finally coming down. I'm really hoping that another woodie (or RMC Hybrid) replaces it, as I just can't see a steelie going in it's place.

Any word on what the fate of the old Hurricane trains are? Coaster museum? Scrap pile?

I bet the hurricane trains either:
A. Are used for Racer or The Beast
B. Get shipped to another Cedar Fair park
C. Become part of Haunt
D. Are sold
E. Sit around Flight of Fear's bowl with pieces of other horrible rides that plagued Kings Island's past.

^ At least they can keep the old King Cobra trains company inside the bowl.

Make no mistake, the amount of people who genuinely will miss SoB can be counted on one hand. It still stands though that removing the world's tallest, fastest wooden coaster is a loss - sad to see a concept not reach full potential.

So according to their twitter they're selling pieces of SoB for the ripe old price of $99.99...

I'd still rather chop up a dead, rotting tree than use that **** for firewood.

^ Meh, kinda want to buy the plaque, just for the hell of it, but, it's $99, and I'd rather put that money towards something better, especially considering the fact that I already have a piece of Tremors road steel, 2 pieces of Timber Terror side friction rail, and 3 rail bolt nails off of Tremors hanging on the wall in my office.

If anybody wants, I've got some wood on a plaque that I'm pretty sure was from a wooden a roller coaster - only $50?

I would like to buy a plaque from SOB as I rode it in 2000 2 months after it opened, but there is only a USA number and not international one..

Fans of Kings Island’s Son of Beast roller coaster now have the chance to take home a memento of the shuttered ride.

The Mason theme park announced today it is offering limited edition plaques featuring a piece of track from the coaster for $99.99. The park is also selling authentic pieces of the wood structure for $49.99 and structural bolts for $24.99.

Son of Beast was heralded as the world’s tallest, fastest and only looping wooden roller coaster when it opened in 2000. The track climbs to a 218-foot peak, followed by a 214-foot drop; its trains would reach speeds of 78 mph.

But its history was troubled from the start. A string of accidents, closings, repairs, five lawsuits, settlements and one trial would ultimately shutter the $10 million ride.

Construction crews began work last month to demolish the troubled coaster.

It will take several months to fully dismantle the $10 million ride, which includes 53 concrete pilings, about 6,000 feet of steel track, 50,000 pounds of nails, 225,000 bolts and 1.65 million board feet of wood, said park spokesman Don Helbig.

Officials don’t yet know what they intend to do with the 12 acres that Son of Beast will vacate in the park’s north end. Once the ride is removed, crews will begin surveying the land and evaluating ideas.

“There’s plenty of room to work with and we’re excited about that opportunity as we look towards the future,” said Helbig.

To order, call 513-754-5776 between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. M-F.

Wow, it's no wonder theme park companies get away with so much

I also have some mud that was from the construction of Maverick somewhere in my back garden. $10 a pound!

Here are some photos I grabbed while at the park. Not much progress with SoB's deconstruction - but the trees sure look perrrty!

And just for kicks, here are some other glimpses from the park.

Just ordered my bolt! The lady on the phone said that they should start getting them out in late October or early November.

The funny thing is...when they put up that video of them retracking The Beast in early 2011, I said that they should sell bags of the wood shot through a chipper-shredder. Wonder if I had anything to do with this...

No they just realized that they had a great way of making money since the wood probably won't be good enough to reuse and the bolts aren't worth crap to a scrapper (seriously those bolts won't even go for a buck a pound).
