This was in the Daily Mail. I'd like to make it clear that I do not read the Daily Mail but the link popped up in one of my Google news alerts.

A huge new Star Trek-themed attraction in Jordan looks set to get the go-ahead after funding worth $1.5bn was secured for the project.

The ambitious 184-acre site will be called the Red Sea Astrarium and will be located in the coastal town of Aqaba.

It will feature four hotels and Star Trek-themed attractions, including a state of the art 'space-flight adventure' simulator ride, which developers promise will raise 'real-time immersive entertainment experiences to bold new heights'.

Other attractions in the park will feature Jordan's Nabatean, Babylonian, British and Roman influences, along with theatrical productions, night-time shows, restaurants and shops.

The park is a pet project of King Abdullah of Jordan, who is known to be a fan of Star Trek, having once featured as an extra in an episode of the television show Star Trek: Voyager.

Construction on the park is expected to begin in March 2012 with the opening scheduled for 2014.

Wouldn't you just love to have billions of cash lying about? "I know, today I'll build a Star Trek theme park". Now that would be awesome.

Great idea, and I'm sure this park will be heavily themed but will this park have any coasters in it?

"Today I feel like building Cedar point in my back garden"...if only! :--D

I can't help but feel that Star Trek's fanbase generally aren't the kind of people to visit theme parks?

It's in Jordan anyway, so it'll get scrapped soon enough.

]If they were going to have a coaster then I'm betting on an Intamin accelerator with a layout similar to speed- the ride.

It would also be good if they had a heavily themed dark ride like Disney's Space mountain rides but themed around Star Trek instead.

Have they finally invented the holodeck yet?

Seriously though, I'm doubtful of this being a success if anything.

On Ian's picture it looks like there's a large, wide swimming pool, would this even fit in with the theming?
All I can see is water cannons shaped like lazer cannons!

I can't see many young, girls or adults saying "Yay! Let's go to the Star Trek theme park!" Nor teens either!

Do you think it will be like disney with 'character meet and greet'!

^ It isn't like the Star Trek franchise has been relaunched under the brilliant direction of JJ Abrams or anything.

I could see this being a success, but admittedly it would need to stay "current" to appeal to the younger generation. This would most likely mean not focusing too much on Star Trek TNG, for which many Trekkies (including myself) would be sad.

I'll be intrigued to see if this goes forward!

Paramount Murcia's star trek 'land' will give this place a run for it's money...it might not even be built now!

Aqaba? At least they'll be able to tie the occasional stray Sinai-Israel mortar rocket into the theme fairly easily...

Please tell me that was a joke.. Do you realise the distance between Jordan and Spain? It wouldn't surprise me if half or Jordan couldn't point to Spain on a map.

I bet half of Spain couldn't put Jordan on the map either. ;)
