Was hoping to see some redemption for Thorpe Park in the 2025 figures after Hyperia's opening year was plagued with issues and, if the 2024 report is to be believed, resulted in reduced attendance. It's certainly felt busy these past couple of years, yet its absence from the EMEA top 20 this time suggests it's still below 2023 figures. And while there's obvious external factors at play (not least the cost of living rises in the UK), it's disheartening to see gate figures shrink and worrying to think of the implications on future Hyperia-scale investments.
Of course, there's the usual disclaimer that attendance measurement is rarely an exact science, let alone the nicely-shaped figures that actually get reported to TEA. I struggle to believe, for example, that Alton Towers is casually up half a million in the same two year period while the rest of the UK industry is clearly struggling...
I’ll be honest, I’m highly sceptical of these figures for the Merlin parks.
I struggle to believe that Thorpe gets less than 1.6 million, for a start. They got 1.5 million in 2023, as per the park’s own social media page, and Hyperia was said to have led to a rise in guest figures (again, by Merlin themselves). Unless Thorpe was vastly quieter again in 2025 (which anecdotally, it didn’t feel like), I’d be surprised if they were under the 1.6 million mark as them leaving the top 20 would suggest.
I also know that as per Merlin’s last chart, released in late 2024 as part of the Minecraft planning application, Chessington supposedly hit 2 million in 2023 and matched Legoland, yet TEA says they left the top 20 and never returned at that point or some point before. Unless Chessington’s attendance absolutely plummeted again after Jumanji, which we have no reason to believe that it did, them being below 1.6 million would also surprise me.
The Legoland figure seems believable enough, and 2025’s Alton figure, based on the Merlin chart for 2022 and 2023, would seem more believable than the last few in the TEA, where I do believe they understated Alton for a number of years post-Smiler crash (Merlin’s own chart had 2022 and 2023 at 3 million or so, while TEA had them at the low 2 millions. Merlin’s own data also had Alton over 500,000 higher than TEA reported in 2021 and at closer to 2.5 million in 2019 when TEA were reporting only 2.1 million).
It does depend on how “guests” are defined, I guess, but given the TEA seems to have varied in whether it has over-reported or under-reported the Merlin parks over the years, this wouldn’t seem to be it (if it were a methodological difference in how “guests” were calculated, I’d anticipate the discrepancies being more consistent).
