Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothing

For me it was when my iPod went into DFU mode and I spent three minutes trying to get it out.

Re: Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothi

When I was new to AutoCAD, and did that noob thing where I was on a composed sheet, zoomed in towards a viewport till it was the whole screen, double clicked to activate it, and then tried to zoom out, but was stuck zooming in and out within the viewport, and couldn't zoom out to see the whole sheet.
Didn't know about the PAPERSPACE command, and thought I had mucked up my drawing by 'trapping' myself in the viewport.

I guess only AutoCAD users would get this, it happens lol https://www.google.com/search?btnG=1&pw ... n+viewport

When I first got Kinect on my 360, I was trying out the mic function for the first time, whilst trying to iron out the teething problems having a little fun with it I commanded it to open the disk drive, and instead of obeying that command, it decided to take me to some payment screen for a 12 month gold family membership which was about £60, so I promptly turned off the console without saying a word in case it confirmed the payment.

Gazza, I'm probably the only person lolling at you right now - though only because AutoCAD is the only bit of software that has ever remained a complete mystery to me (I support three ACAD LT Users  ).

Just had one of those moments actually. Was formatting a backup drive on our Hastings Server (Hastings is about a 5 hour drive away, so I remote in).

Formatted and it came back to the Disk Management screen and the main data drive was highlighted. Had one of those fantastic feelings, you know where all the blood drains from your head down and gets replaced with an icy chill and all the skin tightens and your scrotum becomes the size of a pea pod (though for some of you that may be engorged :p ).

There was no way I'd formatted the wrong drive (The drive name was "Hastings - Monday Backup"), but for just those two seconds until the intelligent part of my brain kicked in, all I could see was all the **** hitting the fan

This is why I usually spend ages before doing anything irrevocable and triple and quadruple check first. This morning I just did it without thinking too much which is why it caused panic :)

Gazza I had the same thing happen to me, too. Once it happens for the first time it never happens again.

The first day I got my new phone I somehow managed to lockout the SD Card, still don't know how the hell I managed to do it.

Re: Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothi

I got electrocuted by an unplugged computer once in college...

Re: Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothi

Yeah, capacitors (caps we call them in the trade :p ) can hold a charge for a long time and if you have a short from one, you can get a shock.

Not as bad as old CRT screens, the charges they could hold could be tens of thousands of volts, even when unplugged!!!

I uploaded a photo of my face to EA's game face option and it gave me a black neck :|

Re: Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothi

Back in 2004 I installed Slackware Linux, but somehow messed up the bootloader configuration. Obviously neither operating systems would boot and I was convinced I'd deleted my XP partition. A simple LILO reinstall fixed the problem.

Looking back, I was a complete newbie to Linux and probably shouldn't have been messing around with an advanced "distro". At least it put me in at the deep end, though :)

Me and my Uncle went halves on this dumb terminal thing once just because we were intreagued and wanted to play with it. Within an hour we'd managed to put it into some kind of neverending loop on boot that was impossible to get out of, thus killing it. Oh well, it was only £20.

Re: Technology moment that freaked you out when it was nothi

I was with my friend messing around on her Blackberry, and she put on some recording of white noise, and it was really annoying, so I told her to turn it off, and she tried to stop it, and it wouldn't, and then she turned off the phone, and it was still playing, so she took the battery out... And it stopped... :|

Recently the NO:SVD FOR SID error in RCT3. A simple reinstall of the CS was all I needed, but I was scared out of my mind.

I was apart of a design studio my senior year at University of Cincinnati, during which we created a simulated 2020 class that utilized an entire wall screen interaction.

Imagine this but spanning a 30 ft. wall.

In order to have it run properly, we needed technical help directly from Cisco, and the ability to tap into UC's servers for proper bandwidth. Our presentation swam perfectly, but during the tear down, the server backup was accidentally disconnected. This was not caught, and that night UC had a huge electrical storm that caused problems with these same servers. When they attempted to boot from a backup, they were not able to access the backups - potentially meaning that three colleges worth of data had been lost. Gratefully, they were able to work around it - but I felt like I had lost a year of my life from worry!
