The Games we play...

My 7 year old has become obsessed with the £10 Gamecube I gave him a few months back; Loz WW, Mario Kart and Paper Mario have all been played more than when I actually used my own Gamecube. The machine was such an underrated bit of kit, let down by a silly handle, underwhelming entries in the standard Ninty series, and the clicky triggers on the otherwise decent pad. When it shone though, on the likes of Eternal Darkness, the Resi Games, and lesser Nintendo franchises like F Zero, it housed some of the highlights of that generation of console. Frankly its a better machine too than the godawful wii.

Struck me a few weeks ago how much I missed my GC. I still think it has the most ergonomic controller I've had the pleasure of using, with the 360 a closeish second. Wind Waker's my favourite Zelda, and probably one of my favourite games. Along with Paper Mario (amazed as to how intelligent and relevant it still is today) and games like Pikmin, Metroid Prime, RE4 and others, I had an absolute gem of a time on that machine. Totally coloured my childhood. I'm going to replay everything this university year, I can see it now.

On top of that, I've got these all preordered: Rage, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim (and a load of others which I can't see because my internet's being ****); I've bought an absolute boatload of games on Steam and only managed to get around to playing ~5 minutes of each of them. One of 'em, Bastion, has a wonderful soundtrack incidentally.

Don't know how long this has been out but I found it a couple of nights ago.

Years and years ago I used to have a PC game on disk where you could play it and I've wanted them to do something like this ever since.
It's only in beta atm but it's great fun. You can play the computer or other players online, you can trade cards, customise your characters and you get even use codes you get in real packs of cards to unlock extra decks.
It may seem childish but I like card games like this. I enjoyed playing Yu-Gi-Oh in school but that was mainly because noone knew how to play Pokemon. :p

But yeah. It's free to play so here's the link. :)

I'm currently playing Back to the Future - Part 1 because it was FREE! I like free! It's pretty good for free, but not as good as the classic Lucasarts adventures you can get for free elsewhere.

Still, I like supporting the genre as long as it doesn't cost me anything, just wish they were more challenging and had better animation.

In other news:

Nintendo have apparently got an issue with the 3DS design... Not only are they potentially looking at moving away from the 3D aspect as it's a bit of a sales killer, but they've realised that everyone loves dual analogue sticks. So here is the solution (until a rebranded, redesigned 3DS comes out next year (probabl)) and it's pretty ugly. Well done Nintendo.

Oddly, it's come out as the price drop has suddenly made the 3DS a system worth buying and sales are picking up massively. If only it had some games on it, but I'm tempted by Star Fox this week because I loved the N64 version (though I will have to break my fingers for supporting Nintendo's "remake unto death" philosophy). I can forgive them though because the Virtual Console Gameboy Donkey Kong is superb :) Actually, it's not that good - you're still unforgiven Nintendo!!!

Mere moments until SOTC and Ico now! Squee!

I've had mine predordered since January. :--D

Trouble is, I've also got Child of Eden and FIFA 12 on preordered, and all three come out on the same day. Overload. xD

*owns both*
*face of troll*

Anyway I got Dead Island and El Shaddai and have had a fair bit of time of both.

Dead Island first. Of what I've played it's Incredibly... dull. So far it's like an MMO with all the Massive multiplayer taken out and all the kill monster quests gone so all you're left with is endless fetch quests and awkward combat. Next is a slight problem but the impact is big. The facial animation... It's horrifying. One of my characters eyes is stuck constantly looking as far left as possible and the other one is stuck in a dead stare forward and everyone else has an equally off putting dead stare. Even more dead that Fallout 3/NV. Everything else is just boring and repetative. Also the voice acting is in the relms of Not bad it's good but incredibly annoying.

And El Shaddai: Accention of the Metatron. It's really good, The whole design of it is pretty danm good. It has this awesomly bizarre and surreal feel to it and ah lurve it. The character designs are a bit odd like and the main characters art has a scary bulge on it :C. Combat is simple and fun, the ambient music is awesome (battle music is suitable I guess). The English voice acting is still bad so I just stuck it on Japanese (Lucifel's voice HRRRRGN). Also the story is based on the Book of Enoch, I like my religious things sometimes so yeah. Get it.

^ Awww, Dead Island is bad? :( For me, ive gone retro and broken out my Game Boy Pocket for some old school Pokemon cause Im that dorky and have no social life during the week lol. Currently waiting for the DLC for Lefy 4 Dead 2 and going to be eating the houses energy after Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out so I can swing the gold wiimote around and look like a total geek while doing so. Yes, I will be playing it left handed as is tradition to all Zelda games (bar twilight princess)

Switching between the hideouts'...

To anyone who has an XBOX 360 and (assuming you all live above ground, have skin and do no feast on human flesh) have and XBL account. **** GET RADIANT SILVERGUN AND IKARUGA. DO IT **** NOW.

Going to get From Dust for the weekend, it's only a tenner.

It's a physics based puzzle game pretending to be a God game (like Populus). It's gorgeous though and enough fun to put a tenner into it.

I used to be Terrified of Populus... we had it copied onto the same disk as some zombie game. Did not want.

Been trying out OnLive. It's actually pretty impressive. Although you have to have an amazing internet connection for it to run properly.

My PC is **** and can't play anything better than RCT2 so it was cool to be able to play proper games on it.
I only played a few demos and it loads instantly. Although while playing quite often it would freeze for around 5 seconds with connection errors or it would lag and go pixilated.
Still quite cool though. :)

It's an interesting Concept but there will always be people, my self included, who just prefer to have a physical copy of a game so there's no drive for me to get it. Nor is there any Exclusives on it that are particularly interesting... (If any at all?)

Main problem with onlive is you cancel your subscription you lose your games you've bought full price with it, but tbh I think it's been made with America in mind not the uk, as their broadband is much more advanced then ours and faster, but if I'm honest it's still cool and I downloaded it to my iPad :)

When internet access becomes as reliable as our domestic water and electric supplies, then cloud systems will be the way forward.

Until then, it's all too much of a risk and too unreliable. If you have a good connection that's always stable, then fair enough. It's be no use for me though as we often have minor drop outs and our upload isn't up to scratch.

I think it's a good idea in principle though and it's something we'll see start to take off. It's an interesting thing though.

PC gaming has been having diminishing returns for a long time. Steam is helping a lot, but the PC gaming community suffers a lot from "tech burnout" and piracy. So gamers are constantly offsetting near constant hardware upgrades with reduced purchases of games. So you tend to find that the PC only gets "big names" in terms of game releases. This means releasing games on a PC is a risk for a publisher (as it is for them releasing on the Wii or PSP - low attach rates). So, On-Live relies on the PC games business. The issue is how do you get people who love their PC gaming to move from power rigs to On-Live? Most wont want to have the slightest latency (hence why they play on power rigs). So you're looking really at casual players who want PC gaming on their iPad or whatever.

That's fair enough, but is it enough to buoy the PC market and get more games released? Doubtful.

Yes, you can run 360 and PS3 stuff over it too, but it doesn't make any sense as the overall cost of On-Live far outweighs the benefit of having a console (especially in terms of cost).

I think it has legs when everyone has very fast, very stable internet. Definite benefits to , but I'm waiting to see if it can really set the world on fire or not...

Oh, and...

Ni No Kuni - Studio Ghibli's game is coming out in North America, which hopefully means Europe too.

I know I'm a mess here after watching that, I suspect Kim has undergone some form of fanboy induced nuclear reaction and the North East on England is now decimated...
