What's new

The year that was 2013

2013 is nearly over.

I am making a video collaborating the big events of the year...Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, Britain winning the Ashes, Prince George's birth etc.

I need your help! I need ideas of what to include. I have got some ideas but I need more!

I also want ideas for songs that have been written this year. I have plenty from May onwards but none for the early months of the year.

Do please give me ideas!

By the sound of it you're making a video "collaborating the big events of the year in the UK", or do you want suggestions that are not UK specific?

If I can get enough from around the world then yes, I don't want 99% UK with one story from somewhere else, ideally I'd like a 50/50 split but of course not living elsewhere I don't get foreign headlines...apart from big ones like, for example, Prince George's birth which was broadcast worldwide :p

I dont recall Britain winning the ashes. However I do recall England retaining the ashes

Posting from a random place which you need to find me at.

No, Raybould. Had the series been tied then England would have "retained" the Ashes by virtue of winning the previous series. But with a 3-0 series margin then "winning" the Ashes is what England did.

Same applies to the Ryder Cup in golf. Retention is by the previous winning side if the tournament finishes level.

The utter failure of Obamacare, The Goverment Shutdown, Everything that Toronto mayor Rob Ford said, or took a picture, and of course, "we gun put ya'll back in dem chainzzzz...."

Ok really. The freedom tower being built? I don't know. Not very exciting stuff happened in 2013 in the USA. Or even the world to be honest that I can remember. HOWEVER, for the songs, I guess you can put in some natural disasters and play "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. You can also use that government stuff and put in "Demons", by Imagine Dragons. Oh yes, about Rob Ford, you can do "Amsterdam", you guessed it, by Imagine Dragons...

Really? You named 2 US political events and 1 Canadian. There was plenty of excitement. Just maybe not a national sports story.

What about the NSA scandal (snowden)? Or the fukishima meltdown in Japan? Or the Cyprus bail ins? Or China and Japan in a dick measuring contest over some islands? Or the super typhoon in the phillipenes?

Nope, you're both wrong.

England won the series to retain the Ashes.

You don't win something you already own.

If you include sports events you should include the Red Sox winning the world series and giving the city of Boston their first moment to celebrate togehter after the tragic events that happend at the Boston Marathon.

yeah because nothing shows unity more than winning a sporting event 8 months after a terrorist attack with the fourth largest payroll in your sport.

the crazy Spanish train driver was another national news story.

Yeah because April 15 to October 30 is 8 months away. Whats your point with the payroll ? The yankees and the phillies have a higher payroll and did not even make the playoffs.

Sorry, 6 months.

My point, from a sports perspective, is they werent some Cinderella story that came out of nowhere to unite a city. They are a team that spent $160 million and were expected to win. That was about $100 million more than what was donated to the victims.

Additionally, it was a non story outside of the north east. Unlike Murray who had the whole country behind him, the rest of the US hates Boston sports and root against them.

My point, from a humanistic perspective, is that was not the first time the city got together to celebrate. I am sure there was some celebrating when the accused suspects were captured/killed. And while I am sure a lot of people in the city love baseball, im sure the majority of them don't care about sports in any sense. So, to cover the sox winning is one thing, to link it to the bombing is another.

I wouldn´t say that they weren´t a Cinderella story. After last years mess under Bobby V the Red Sox were doubted and nowhere close of beeing a championship contender, sure a cinderella story is different but few to none expected the sox to win it all before the season started. To argue about the money baseball players and athletes are making compared to the victims is a different story.I agree that the victims famillies need the money more than the players but it is what it is. Sure a lot of players are overpaid but that´s just the way it is in todays sports buisiness.

Us cities generally dislike other cities when it comes to sports, and since the world series is a tournament with only us cities participating (go figure) it´s pretty obvious that compared to a tournament like Wimbledon with internationla participants, it´s highly unlikely that the whole us roots for one team.
The question is was Murrays win a story outside of the UK ? I´d say no, the countries where it was something special was the UK just like it was something special in Boston when the Sox won and celebrated with the people on the place were the bombs went of.

Just like I mentioned before the Sox linked the sport with the bombing themselves, I did not. It was something special for the people in Boston and a lot of people from all over the us,who generally dislike the Sox were happy to see them win because of the tragedy and give the people of Boston something to cheer about.

So, tell me more about the other countries competing in the world series to make it an international event of note - like the Murray win ;)

It´s called World Series and there are international players playing for the teams, would that be enough enough :p ?

So, kind of like every of team sports league in every country - only they're not called "World"? I see ;)

So no, not for PedantForce :p

Jordan, that Meteor strike over Russia was huge news in Feb? (not sure if feb) That's the only major event I can think of that didn't involve lots of death, which i'm sure you'd like to a avoid.
