Top 10(ish): 2024 Edition - page 124

Since 2015, I’ve kept Fury 325, Goliath (Six Flags Over Georgia) and Kumba in my top 10 — unfortunately, I forgot how outstanding Goliath truly is after 3 years of not riding it; a re-visit to Six Flags Over Georgia in September 2018 fixed that. Kumba is a very nostalgic coaster for me and one that I’m somewhat biased towards, as it was the coaster that got me over my fear of coasters (I think some of you might know that by now, from how much I love it). Fury 325 was my first truly daunting roller coaster, as I must admit that I was mildly scared by the prospect of a ride 300 feet in the air — which gave me nearly as much fear as the concept of going upside down 7 different times on Kumba.

While we're all on the subject of comparison, I may as well compare my present top 10 to the first top 10 I posted in this thread back in December 2017. Somewhat more recent than some, but it's the best I can provide as I didn't really start properly ranking coasters too long before this. This also represents the first and probably last time I will ever use coloured text on a forum, as I'm going to provide a little insight into where certain rides in the list now sit! This could get interesting, as I haven't actually ridden that much that's made my top 10 since I made this list, but I have reshuffled the list quite a bit:
Matt N's First Top 10 on CoasterForce (from December 2017)
(no change is in black, higher position is in green and lower position is in red)
  1. Mako (SeaWorld Orlando) (no change, still #1)
  2. Montu (Busch Gardens Tampa) (-1, now #3)
  3. SheiKra (Busch Gardens Tampa) (-1, now #4)
  4. The Swarm (Thorpe Park) (-2, now #6)
  5. Nemesis (Alton Towers) (no change, still #5)
  6. The Smiler (Alton Towers) (-6, now #12)
  7. Incredible Hulk (Universal's Islands of Adventure) (-3, now #10)
  8. Kraken (SeaWorld Orlando) (no change, still #8)
  9. Megafobia (Oakwood) (-5, now #14)
  10. Kumba (Busch Gardens Tampa) (+1, now #9)
So that's my top 10 comparison! I don't know about you, but for me, it makes for very interesting reading, and also proves how indecisive I am, as I haven't actually ridden any of the Florida rides in this list or Megafobia since 2016, for example, but I rearranged the order after thinking about my top 10 properly and properly comparing my enjoyment of the rides within it with one another. Since I made this list, only 4 new coasters have actually entered my top 10 (Wicker Man, Icon, Rock'n'Rollercoaster for a brief period before my post-Florida reshuffle and Mine Blower), but some rides like The Smiler and Megafobia have actually fallen by more spots than that. Kumba, on the other hand, actually managed to go up by a spot, as I later remembered how good it actually was! Finally, for means of comparison, here is my present top 10:
Matt N's Present Top 10 (as of May 2019)
  1. Mako (SeaWorld Orlando)
  2. Icon (Blackpool Pleasure Beach)
  3. Montu (Busch Gardens Tampa)
  4. SheiKra (Busch Gardens Tampa)
  5. Nemesis (Alton Towers)
  6. The Swarm (Thorpe Park)
  7. Mine Blower (Fun Spot Kissimmee)
  8. Kraken (SeaWorld Orlando)
  9. Kumba (Busch Gardens Tampa)
  10. Incredible Hulk (Universal's Islands of Adventure)

I like this whole comparison idea, let's see...

So today's is
  1. Steel Vengeance
  2. Lightning Rod
  3. Outlaw Run
  4. Skyrush
  5. X2
  6. Voyage
  7. El Toro
  8. Fury 325
  9. Superman SFNE
  10. Boulder Dash
Back in 2013, it was
  1. Millennium Force
  2. Beast
  3. El Toro
  4. Maverick
  5. I305
  6. Nitro
  7. Top Thrill Dragster
  8. Goliath @ SFOG
  9. Magnum
  10. Diamondback
We have only one holdover, El Toro. However, Maverick's in my number 11 spot currently, so it just barely misses the list. I find it interesting just how differently I'd rank these rides now, I re-rode all of them except Beast, Diamondback, and I305.

I too have found my tastes change quite drastically over time @Edward M, and judging by the thread I just made, I don't think I'm the only one! If you fast forward back to around 2014 and look at what my top 3 was probably something like back then, very little of what's in my present day top 10 was in there. Thinking about it, my top 3 in around 2014 probably went something like this:
  1. The Swarm (still in my top 10 at #6)
  2. Stealth (now #15)
  3. Rita (now #54. I don't think changes in taste get much more drastic than that considering I've only ridden 64 coasters!)

I have my top 10 coasters dated at August 3, 2016, which are all fortunately saved in a Google Doc... here they are:

10. Fahrenheit
9. Kraken
8. Lightning Racer
7. Afterburn
6. Kumba
5. Intimidator
4. Goliath
3. Mako
2. Fury 325
1. Skyrush

Please note that this was a few months before my first trip to Dollywood for Smoky Mountain Coasterfest, in which Lightning Rod garnered a spot as my #4 favorite coaster.

Interesting list @Kw6sTheater! One thing I notice is that Mako sits above Goliath in your 2016 list, but it doesn't now. Has Mako deteriorated since 2016? I certainly hope not!

My top 10 changes very frequently, but here it is in it's current state:

10. Wickerman
9. Revenge of the Mummy (Universal Florida)
8. Big Thunder Mountain (Paris)
7. The Incredible Hulk
6. Joris en de Draak
5. Olympia Looping
4. The Swarm
3. Expedition Everest
2. Baron 1898
1. Nemesis

With a few exceptions, I tend to prefer highly themed coasters that have a great attention to detail, which is why coasters like Baron 1898 and Expedition Everest rank so highly with me. Nemesis has always been my number one ever since my first ride, and I sometimes wonder if anything will ever knock it from it's spot!

2012:

1 Sheikra
2 Kraken
3 Silver Star
4 Wodan Timber Coaster
5 Stealth
6 Rock N Roller Coaster
7 Nemesis
8 Incredible Hulk Coaster
9 Dragon Challenge
10 Kumba

2019:

1 Helix
2 Der Schwur Des Kärnan
3 Sheikra
4 Shambhala
5 Taron
6 Icon
7 Wodan Timber Coaster
8 Kraken
9 Silver Star
10 Stealth

It hasn't, your #1 coaster is still as good as ever @Matt N - after one ride on Goliath with 2+ inches of room, I flew out of my seat on every single hill. That is truly what puts Goliath slightly above Mako for me; Goliath's wooded setting and unique layout flying out of the park and coming back in doesn't hurt either. If you're interested in my top coasters, I've been organizing a list of my favorites and one day hope to put all 150 coaster credits I have on it; https://captaincoaster.com/en/tops/740

Phew; good to know! Thanks for the reassurance @Kw6sTheater; I was only asking because I saw it lower in your list, and I've heard quite a few people say that B&M hypers don't tend to age very well, so I got a bit nervous. I rode Mako two months after it opened, and I remember it being absolutely wonderful; more wonderful than anything else I've ever ridden to this day! The problem I face is that my memory of Mako is so fond that I worry it would underwhelm me if I was to go back on it...

Also, cool Captain Coaster list! I think I have seen it before, actually, as I'm also a frequent user of the site!

Oh this is going to be interesting.

2013..................................2019
1. El Toro............................Steel Vengeance
2. Maverick..........................Lightning Rod
3. Voyage...........................Outlaw Run
4. Skyrush...........................Goliath
5. Leviathan.........................Voyage
6. Diamondback....................Superman: The Ride/Bizarro
7. Top Thrill Dragster.............Boulder Dash
8. Griffon.............................El Toro
9. Ravine Flyer II...................Maverick
10. Gatekeeper....................Fury 325

OH. MY. GOODNESS. This is actually such a fascinating little exercise. It's wild looking at not only at how much my list has changed, but everybody else's over time. Some lists are completely unrecognizable!

It's evident that one of the main drivers of these significant changes for everybody is the advent of RMCs and our desire to ride them immediately. In addition, my northeast trip in 2015 allowed me to finally understand the hype surrounding both Boulder Dash and Bizarro. Looking a bit deeper in my rankings, living in Louisville for a bit and my California trip in 2017 further buried a good portion or rides in the bottom half of my 2013 list.

Three coasters, which I've italicized, have survived over the past six years: Voyage, El Toro, and Maverick. Even after riding a good amount of RMCs and various other flagships, like Fury, those three coasters have held on, which goes to show just how freakin' good they are.

Considering we've been together for some if not all of those.. crazy how we've changed over the years. Obviously I'm superior but still. :p

I think you need to take a paternity test with @Howie, scary that. One day you will become this;

Did some digging and I've got some semblance of a list back in August 2015 following a trip to Liseberg, with less than 100 creds to my name.
I imagine it's the first time I cared.

2015
1. Helix - Liseberg
2. Revenge of the Mummy - Universal Studios Singapore
3. Goliath - Walibi Holland
4. Nemesis - Alton Towers
5. Balder - Liseberg
6. Nemesis Inferno - Thorpe Park
7. Daemonen- Tivoli Gardens
8. Big Thunder Mountain - Disneyland Paris
9. Stealth - Thorpe Park
10. Lisebergbanan - Liseberg

Only one that bothers me there is Stealth, the rest I can live with.

2019
1. Helix - Liseberg
2. Python in Bamboo Forest - Wanda Nanchang
3. Jungle Trailblazer - Fantawild Dreamland Zhengzhou
4. Twisted Colossus - Six Flags Magic Mountain
5. Skyrush - Hersheypark
6. Flying Aces - Ferrari World
7. Eejanaika - Fuji-Q Highland
8. Twisted Timbers - Kings Dominion
9. Fjord Flying Dragon - Happy Valley Tianjin
10. El Toro - Six Flags Great Adventure

Only Helix remains. Good.

I made my first top 10 list in 2015 and the only coaster still in my top 10 from then is Goliath at Great America. I don't really rank anymore so I can't say for sure, but if it says anything, at the end of 2015 I was at 54 creds, and now I'm at 179. So it makes sense.

Cool idea. Mine has changed drastically in even just a few years

2016-
1) Maverick
2) Superman The Ride
3) Skyrush
4) Boulder Dash
5) Wicked Cyclone
6) El Toro
7) Storm Runner
8) Phoenix
9) Nitro
10) Millennium Force

2019-
1) Python in Bamboo Forest
2) Helix
3) Dinoconda
4) Boulder Dash
5) OCT Thrust
6) Maverick
7) Skyrush
8) Wildfire
9) Superman: The Ride
10) Coaster Through The Clouds

In just three years, only Maverick, Skyrush, Superman: The Ride, and Boulder Dash survived my top 10, with Boulder Dash the only one still in my top 5.
And there's still plenty of time in 2019!!

I gave my top list a bit of a thought and re-shuffle to better reflect how I feel about all the rides I've done after a few years. Here's what I came up with (certainly a few controversial opinions in there).

Had to drop Raptor out of my top 40, though. It did not age well at all, the first ride on it was absolutely dreadful (worst ride I ever had on a B&M). It was better on the two rides later in the day, but I still had to ride rather defensively for the restrains not to tighten up way too much...

Wow! I don't think I've ever seen Oblivion The Black Hole ranked that highly before; it must be really good if you preferred it to the likes of Kumba, Wodan and Formula Rossa, and have it almost as high as Nemesis!

Shame to hear about Raptor, though; by "not aged well", do you mean that it was rough, or do you mean that it hasn't aged well in a different way?

Yeah, I was quite surprised myself to like it quite this much, especially since I'm not a big fan of Dive coasters in general. But this ride does everything it sets out to do perfectly. The first drop is great, floater hill is just perfect and the final inversion is just lovely as well in terms of forces. And I'm really glad they went for the old school OTSRs on this rather than vests, since I don't think it would ride anywhere near as well with more restrictive restraints.

As for the other rides you've listed;
Wodan is a really fun ride with lots of lovely pops of airtime, but hasn't been much of a standout for me. F
Rossa was a bit of a disappointment as it felt rather bland and forceless for such a major record breaker. The only reason I have it in my top40 is due to the launch being really bonkers in the front row. I don't think I'll ever experience anything quite like it.
And it's been years since I rode Kumba (8+) and Nemesis (almost 6) now and I only rank them based on the fact how much I remember enjoying them back then, but I don't remember much of how they actually rode. That's also why I rank the Aussie Wild Mouse higher than Blackpool's, since the memory is much fresher and I could get much more rides in on the day, while what I remember of Blackpool's is mostly a blur of some random crazy moments, rather than the ride as a whole.

Shame to hear about Raptor, though; by "not aged well", do you mean that it was rough, or do you mean that it hasn't aged well in a different way?
Yeah, it's rough, mostly on the outside seats. So, if you combine some rather significant juddering with the tightening vest restrains, there's hardly a way you'll get an enjoyable ride out of it.
