Track "seperates" on The Smiler

^I highly doubt it, it is beyond me why they went for them with this ride in the first place

I think it was probably due to the massive success of Saw. But anyway that would be a massive shame, I was rather hoping we'd see Legoland invest in a Gerstlauer Bobsled and Thorpe getting one of their Sky Fly's.

Not really... The ride was manufactured to a tight specification. Chances are the errors have crept in during construction. So badly laid footers that aren't quite in the right position, or subsidence/settling of the ground that is unexpected.

Chances are, it's not Gerstlauer's fault at all.

I think Joey has hit the nail (or should I say bolt) on the head exactly. Bolts shear all the time, but the track visibly separating seems quite a big deal to me. Bloody Gerstlauer

This should not happen to any coaster so early on in it's life, B&M for-ever :--D :--D

Re: RE: Track

Many of you mention weather, but what about other gerstlauer rides in warmer climates? Like the one in Georgia where the average temperature in the summer is in the 90s, which after looking it up, is about the max the current heat wave has gotten.

So 99% certain its not the heat, more likely **** design.

That awkward moment when Swarm did exactly the same thing last year...

And many of us do mention the weather, due to the effect heat has on metal, causing it to expand... With the sudden drop of 10 odd degrees over this weekend, the temp shock can cause quite the effect on a material which has expanded due to prolonged heat exposure...

It's just the British weather, even our rides are shocked when we get prolonged 30+...

Hi, I've just signed up. I was there for the weekend this weekend.

We went on The Smiler yesterday and loved it, and because we had the entry for today as well we went straight there this morning. We arrived before they opened the ride entrance, and queued for half an hour until the entrance was opened. We were pleased that the queue went down quickly once inside the actual ride queue.
Then we heard a loud clang, my friend was facing part and she saw the 8" bolt fall down. After that people from the area started moving away. There were 3 cars still on the ride and they all made it back to safety.
At first people were saying it was a mobile phone or shoe but the bang was too loud.
Then it was announced that there were technical difficulties and it was closing.
My partner had the camera and people spotted a gap on the track. We were near some children and we told them it was just to allow the expansion of the track in hot weather.
My partner got the camera out and took some photos of the gap and zoomed in. We could clearly see the missing bolt.

We carried on around the park and later bumped into someone from the Smiler queue who was near us. He told us that they were giving away Fast Track passes as compensation.
As it was nearer the end of the day and I had to go home to collect my son, my partner went to see Guest Services to see what they could do. Fast Track was no good for us.

In front of him in Guest Services was the mother of a 13 year old boy who was hit in the back by the falling bolt. He was taken to hospital with bruising to his back. VERY VERY lucky that it wasn't his head! :o
They obviously didn't want fast track or return passes, she said they never wanted to come here again. The younger children were scared off roller coasters and rides completely. She said she took them to some of the tamer rides and one of the younger ones said "Are you trying to get us killed?"

Quite scary stuff really.

We think it has been caused by expansion in the hot weather followed by contraction in the cooler weather this weekend.

Also when we looked at the images on the camera and zoomed in even more, we could see a second nut was coming loose.

People were being told that the ride was safely operational with one bolt missing, but if that second one had come undone the track would have come apart.

People were tweeting and commenting on facebook, but from what I can see - #TheSmiler hashtag was deactivated and my friend said that tweets were being pulled from twitter.

I'm already dreading the blown out of proportion media stories
"Riders of The Smiler subjected to Final Destination style horror as the track snaps".

Tried to post images but I'm not authorized....
Yeah, there's an anti-spam system that prevents you from posting images until you've made a certain number of posts. I think most of us have seen several images of the damage anyway.

Thanks for the first hand account. I'm not sure it's so much the variation in temperature (as it's been ridiculously warm, even over night), but certainly heat causes expansion, and if the track is under strain in that particular section of the ride then I suppose the heat can only make things worse.

No doubt the park will be inspecting that particular part of the ride very closely every day for the rest of the season. I also wouldn't be surprised if the end up doing some re-tracking on that part of the ride over the winter. Clearly something isn't quite right here.

Oh, and welcome to CF!

Thanks.
We got a clear photo showing the hole where the bolt was, and it also shows the but coming loose on a second bolt I have posted on other forums though.

With regard to temperature, it has been pushing 30 degrees over the last week, maybe more. Yesterday and today were significantly cooler, I even had to buy a hoodie as I hadn't taken one. It was only about 20 today.

Some people were tweeting similar statements!

The worrying thing there is that there's another bolt that should have kept it in place but that too looks like it's slackened and allowed the gap to pull itself apart.

Very worrying, actually.
