What's new

Google+

Google have obviously stolen the +1 idea from CF!!

It's interesting, as Google can make a decent product (sat nav, gmail), and lets face it, fb is so annoying at times, it can't be hard to improve upon. But however good Google + may be, everyone would have to jump ship at the same time for it to work. My photos and old conversations would need to be moved en masse. I'm just so entrenched in fb to even consider leaving. I don't understand how they could pull it off

...Yeeeeeesssss.... They stole it from us.... Indeeeeeeeeed. ;)

The move from Facebook is actually really easy Sue. You run both concurrently and eventually Facebook ends up dying off... Or it doesn't as it will depend on which is the easiest and most accessible to you.

I think a lot of people will use Google + as a streamlined system. The opportunity to clear out junk "friends" and to get away from the oodles and oodles of complete tosh from the apps, etc. I think it's bland, but it's a lovely step between Twitter and Facebook for me at the moment which is a gap I don't mind filling.

We'll see though, it's all down to how easy it all is. I hate the current Facebook image viewer it forces on you and uploading photos is a chore. Actually, a lot of Facebook is a chore. I'm not saying Google + will make nay of that better or easier, but if it does, then that's when and why people will shift.

ohh don't even get me started about fb photo uploads - it's so difficult!! And I would love to be shot of all the Farmville/magic jewel crap. But what about all my archived message conversions and comments on old photos? I love going back from time to time and seeing what people wrote on my photos - I've been using fb since it was just for universities, and have so much attachment now.

I don't know. I want it to happen - guess I'm just an old stick in the mud

Haven't actually seen Google + yet - got there too late, but I like the sound of the drag and drop circles so it's easier to control who sees what. Although the video conference thing is pointless, I don't think I'd use it, and huddle is just fb multiple person messaging, surely!

Anyway, I'll reserve judgement till I get to see it. As long as it's not another Buzz :/

I agree Sue, but you can have both... You can keep all the archive stuff on Facebook to look back on, there's no Google or Facebook rule, it's an AND :)

I like the idea of linking Google + to Picasa. I don't really use Picasa, but it's a fully fledged online image album system. So if you have a Picasa app on your phone, then it seamlessly integrates everything while you're out and about, a function Twitter has down pat already and that Facebook really struggles with.

Huddle I'm not convinced by, then I remember the MSN conversations we used to have between several CFers. It was childish and fun and huddle could easily take over from that. I hate how Facebook chat is intrusive, but Huddle seems more on the ball. Again, there's a chance that when you use it and it works, it just makes sense.

Again, I don't know as I've not used it enough yet and there aren't enough people on it.

If you want an invite, PM me your email address.

Is this just a PC and Android thing? if so I cannot see how it will take off seeing that FB is on everything.

I should be able to get on it through Android, but they said they'd reached their quota or something. If you wouldn't mind doing an invite, that would be just grand, thanks v. much (if it works). I'm always interested in stuff that could make my life easier :D

Also, Picassa is great because it allows you to keep full quality photos. However, to store any realistic amount you have to subscribe and pay per month. I have friends who do this and it already works in a similar way to fb, with the ability to comment on photos. Could be a nice revenue stream for Google...

It's a Google thing :)

So if you can access Google, you can use it. There's an Android app already and an iPhone app on the way.

It's appealing over Facebook because it's uncluttered. So people who dislike that about Facebook will move. However, I think Facebook still has a lot to offer - it's one of those suck it and see type of things.

Ah ok, I just had a quick look at the fact that you can have your email, photos, documents in one place will be a plus thing.

This could actually take over from FB the way that took over from Myspace.

They do need to make sure the phone apps are good though, the current FB one is rubbish.

I've used iGoogle for years now. It's great having a single place for everything from your browser search/home page. However, I run my own email server, so GMail has never really been an option.

It's still good though and Google do make it pretty seamless.

The Android app is pretty good to be fair, but... Google have a separate App for each of their virtual offerings - sneaky...

Hmm it's ok....

So far I thought it wasn't obvious how to delete people from circles, and I'm already having trouble altering my name from the usual google profile (it's displaying Sue I think, but still showing Suzanne to me erughh). Not a good start.

Ohh, and I love iGoogle. Use it a million times a day. Get my work news feeds, screamscape, everything I need as my homepage.

EDIT: finally got it to change my name. Took about a 10 min delay - that's pretty sucky

The Google profile thing is really annoying actually, one place it's really lacking is simple "who I am" information changes.

Hmm yeah, pretty uninspiring so far, but so was Twitter, Facebook etc.

I like the interface, though, and I can't see it flopping like Wave and Buzz did, just because it seems like they're putting a lot more effort in.

Plus (fnarr) they have the capability to add the +1 thing to the search results listings, which makes them quite powerful... they own search listings. Though saying that, I personally wouldn't "+1" something from the search listings page as seeing it there generally means I haven't actually looked at it yet... but whatever!

I'm feeling like quite the Google pro today... I keep discovering new features!

We've recently dropped Exchange at work and have switched to Google apps for business so I've discovered:

Making Gmail Push to my iPhone, rather than fetch which is working for my standard Gmail account and my work email. Cheeky little tweak where you just add the account as an Exchange account rather than a Gmail account...

Multiple sign in with Google accounts, so I can quickly flick between my personal Gmail and my work Gmail while at work, without having to sign out, sign in, sign out. Works with calendar and iGoogle and other rubbish too.

Getting Google+ and feeling smug, despite not doing anything with it.

Adding some really nerdy filters to my work Gmail to help me organise stuff!

We use the Google calendars at home, REALLY useful. The three of us keep them updated and it means we have an idea of what's going on all the time on either the PC or our Phones - the sharing system is excellent.

I did use the automatic link between Exchange and Gmail too for a while, but it was far too complex to deal with.

I couldn't live without the Google calendar. I access it on my phone and home/work PCs. I haven't picked up my filofax since I got it. Put in my and all my friend's calendars, official holiday date calendars and fb event calendars.I would be lost without it.

Back to Google+
Loving the ability to reply to comments in the notification box. That is a lovely touch.

Sounds a bit like Tweetdeck, stuff like that is really handy.

I only have one friend on G+ so far, so haven't had any notifications...

It needs a "friend sharing" system now really... I've just added Mushroom and Hyde, but until they told me they had it (and their emails), I wouldn't have gone looking.

It's quite funny how much you take for granted after using Facebook, I was just looking at updating my profile and my schools didn't appear in the typeahead, nor did my workplaces. Facebook has a good few years of user entered data over Google!
