How many capital cities have you been to?

Since I've never left the States:

Ohio - Columbus (living here helps)
Indiana - Indianapolis
Michigan - Lansing
West Virginia - Charleston
Virginia - Richmond
Pennsylvania - Harrisburg
Connecticut - Hartford
North Carolina - Raleigh
South Carolina - Columbia
Tennessee - Nashville
Georgia - Atlanta
Arkansas - Little Rock
Missouri - Jefferson City
Iowa - Des Moines
Texas - Austin
Arizona - Phoenix
Nevada - Carson City
 
Just going to say that Hong Kong and Macau aren't countries, they are special administrative regions of China. It's pretty much the same as counting the Isle of Man separately to the UK. I personally wouldn't count Scotland and Wales as separate to the UK even though they are distinct constitute countries either.

By that basis I'm not counting Cardiff!

UK - London
France - Paris
Belgium - Brussels
Netherlands - Amsterdam
Switzerland - Bern
China - Beijing
USA - Washington DC
Turkey - Ankara
Austria - Vienna
Italy - Rome
Vatican City - Vatican City
Estonia - Tallinn

That's 15 out of 23 country credits. If you include Scotland and Wales that total rises to 16 out of 26.

Been to 30 US states but I'm honestly not certain how many US state capitals I've been to as I think I may have slept through some of them!
 
I have Hong Kong and Macau stamps in my passport, the distinctly different currencies in my currency collection and they have different laws.

Much more of a country than Isle of Man by virtue of being countries.

No debate to be had here.

Yeah, but no. For all intents and purposes, Hong Kong and Macau should be treated as separate countries from China, especially with regards to travel, which is what this topic is about. If they were actual China, you'd be able to pass freely between all three, and you can't. Just popping across the border to Shenzhen requires a visa and immigration faff. You don't have to do that to pass between most European countries.

Everything about them is different from the mainland. Maybe further down the line, when all agreements to keep them separate expire, that will be different, but for now they're really not "China" at all. It's absolutely nothing like the Isle of Man.

Anyway, since I'm here, I'll do my list. Three of these are happening within the next week, but unless there's a plane crash or I die some other way in the next 7 days, they're getting done, so I'll stick them in now.

Yeah, I'm not massively well traveled. I've been to London, Dublin, Paris and Helsinki. If I wanted to be desperate, I'd also stick my exchange at Riga airport in there, but that would be silly.

I guess it's arguing over semantics but from a personal standpoint I'd probably call a country an independent sovereign state which neither Hong Kong or Macau (or Scotland, Wales and England for that matter) are. However I think arguing over something like this is similar to arguing about what exactly constitutes a coaster credit in that many people will have slightly different interpretations. I do concede though that I've not been to either so apart from reading about how different they are I don't know how distinct they are from mainland China.

I do admit that if I had been to either I would probably conveniently change my definition to boost my count. Hopefully I'll make my way to Hong Kong next year and will be able to make a better judgment for myself then!

Anyway while I'm at it, other countries I've been to which I haven't been to the capitals of (because I know that everyone cares):

It's nothing to do with "boosting a count" or semantics at all.

In pretty much EVERY conceivable way, they're different.

- Completely different currencies
- Completely different immigration policies
- Completely different laws
- Driving on different sides of the road, among other traffic laws
- Different education systems
- Press censorship in China
- Internet sites censored / blocked in China
- Different phone COUNTRY codes

Those drop down country lists online have them listed separately for a reason.

You're from China and want to visit one of those other "Chinese" cities? A city in your own "country"? You can't without permission and permits from the Chinese government - your own government - since they class it as leaving China.

In China and flying to Hong Kong or Macau? You'll be using the international terminal. Why? Because you're crossing an international border.

I'm a Hong Kong resident. I don't even need a passport to go in and out - I can just stick a card in machine and don't even need to see an immigration officer - but I can't visit the city next door without a visa. Not just a passport, which would by itself constitute international travel; a visa.

Visit Hong Kong without going to the mainland and you'd never get any of that. You'd view it as "Chinese" because of the ethnicity of the people and some old temples and stuff. Go just over the border to Shenzhen and it's like another planet.

There are fewer differences between most European countries than there are between Hong Kong/Macau and China.

It's not "semantics"; it's the reality of the situation.

But what would I know; I only live there.
