What's new

"Now Showing"

Ben, Usual Suspects was the first with that kind of twist - so if you talk to people who saw it before any other "twist" films, you'll get a different reaction.

I saw it at the cinema (1995 was it? Odeon, Hanley, 11:20p.m. showing anyway) and it was totally unexpected - nobody had done a film quite like it before. It was really the film which started the popularity of that kind of thing.

I agree though, having watched it recently, it's not a very good film and is always disappointing compared to my memory of seeing it at the cinema.

Last night though I watched Millers Crossing - excellent. It's got such a fantastic mood, flow and script. It's just a great film to watch. I love the fact it's very much written film noir (no swearing, implied sex and little gratuitous violence) - it makes it kind of innocent, it's difficult to explain, but it just got a great Sunday afternoon matinee feel about it.

Really great stuff, but don't expect you're usual 1920's gangster flick :)

Horton Hears a Who

After watching Ice Age 2, I was apprehensive, to say the least, of this studio's next film. Ice Age 3 looks alright, I guess, but the second film did make it seem that they were looking for more ideas, rather than having them arise naturally from the original idea.

So, having seen this film out in the cinema, I thought nothing of it, and ignored it completely. Another Seuss film, I thought; yeah, I'd skip it.

So it came to be that I was watching it one evening on my aunt's new shiny Blu Ray whatsimajigger, and wow.

Not since Wall-E had I seen something so... so... seemingly in its element. It used what it had at its disposal and used them brilliantly.

It's a funny, charming, simple and actually well animated (For once. I'm looking at you, non Pixar studios...), and I enjoyed every minute of it.

While not oscar an Oscar winning experience, it was really enjoyable to watch. I felt the emotions I was supposed to feel, and at a brisk 80ish mins, it never ever outlived its stay.

Carrey actually fit the character perfectly, never being overly silly, playing the slightly dopey but brilliant Horton. Carrell also did a good job, playing the mayor of Whoville, never outplaying his role. Carol Burnett was splendid as the almost pantomime (but scarily similar to a few too many high up people in the world) antagonists.

And finally, an enormous cheer of joy towards John Powell, who wrote a score I think on par with Thomas Newman's. I've listened to nothing else on my iPod for three days :p

Okay, okay, maybe I went a bit off on one there, but I was genuinely suprised that it was the film it was, and the fact I enjoyed it as much as I did. I would happily watch and rewatch this film until the Wall-E DVD arrives on the scene.

Last night I stayed up and watched Silence of the lambs on tv.

I haven't watched it in ages so I just had to watch it. Its a fantastic film, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are excellent and its got to be their best performances yet. The story is really good with some great twists at the end.

Rating: 4.5/5

Not exactly a now showing but I saw this and simply had to post.

The teaser trailer for Angels and Demons is now up! It looks blooming awesome for the tiny amount of teaser footage they have used!

I can't wait till May now!

Hellboy II

I actually thought it was pretty good.. besides the cruel brutality of the first one, which was good, but this one had a little deeper meaning and plot lines aside the main one.

Not bad at all.

8/10

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Well, being the Star Wars buff that I am, I had to rent it. I actually liked the series on Cartoon Network much more then the movie.. although it did have some kickass battle scenes. If you like SW, I recommend, but if you don't.. don't bother.

I watched Indiana Jones The Crystal Skull film last night.

I'm going to keep this short.

Indiana Jones is meant to be far fetched, that's the idea, but I think that it was taken a bit too far in the most recent film.

Some of the special effects were quite good, and the script lived up to the old Indy films, however I didn't like the huge amounts of CG in the film. Some of it would've been far better if they'd actually have made the set, instead of doing it on a computer afterwards.

Overall, a pretty good film, but it bugged me how it dropped into the Sci-Fi element. That isn't what Indiana Jones is about.

5/10

Quantum of Solace

Well, my first Bond film I've seen the whole way though. I must say, it wasn't blow me away amazing, but it was a pretty good film.

^I just saw that tonight. I'm about to go to bed, so I'll keep the review short:

It was poo.

Saw Zack and Miri Make a Porno last night. It's not that funny for a Seth Rogan film, he usually cracks me up but meh. They tried to hard with the romance side of the film, there wasn't enough sex (the film has porno in the title for Gods sake) and just too long a gap between laughs. Kind of awkward too because at times it was actually like watching a really bad porno film with a load of strangers. The laughs that there were to be had though were actually very funny, and it was nice to have a new cast rather than the same group of actors over and over (as I find with a lot of these American comedies).

I give it a 5/10.

^I'm seeing that on tues with fitzy99. Shame you weren't keen, Kevin Smith is usually really good.

Anyhoo, saw the Bourne Identity again this morning. After reading the book my perception of the film is very different. I just noticed too many major differences between the book and film to stay interested. It's still a solid 6/10 though.

I seriously seriously advise you to save your money and download it or something. It's really not worth it. And how the hell are you two gonna get it anyway? =]

*Edit* Just IMDB'd Kevin Smith, that guy is huge!

Just watched Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull.

Was ok, it is what it is a fun adventure film.

I dont think the story is as a good at the other films but its fun and a good film to watch.

8/10 from me.

BAD POINTS!
Well, what can I say... Zac Effron and Venessa Hudgens CAN NOT lip sync to save their life, new annoying british charactor, who take the mick out of our acsent (suprise suprise) plus she can't sing, plus some bits are really wierd, I won't give to much away for those who havn't seen it, but there's this bit where Troy screams on stage in school at night :?

GOOD POINTS!
Ashley Tisdale's nose is loooooads better :--D And she is good at lip sync, and plus you could say the storyline was okay, not the best but it will do.

MY FILM RATING: 5/10

I hope everybody that was creaming over the Batman film has preordered it and will be getting their copy at midnight and then watching it on repeat for weeks to come.

So many people loved it so much, giving it rave reviews and 11/10's, I really hope you'll all be lining up for it the second it's released.

Haha Ian! I'm glad two of us saw sense at least :)

I have a couple of films. First up in my attempt to finally watch all 100 of the top 100 best films ever (I'm down to missing about 10 I think) - Apocalypse Now Redux

I've seen bits of it here and there over the years, and I've certainly heard it talked about and quoted often enough. Never actually sat down and watched it though.

One of those films... I understand why it's so well rated, and it's a good film, but not the kind of film I'm really into. It's compelling watching though... 9/10

Then, complete change of pace Hairspray (the remake. I can't really remember much about the original, but it was one of those films which I watched, and couldn't understand what all the hype was about. Dunno why I watched the remake, trying to expand my horizons I guess :)

Loved it. It hits the right spot for me immediately as I love that early 60's era. Stupid, fun, pointless and great entertainment :)

Doesn't take the musical crown from Cry Baby though - it doesn't get sillier and cheesier than that :)

8/10 anyway :)
