Toy Story 3

I've been waiting for the sequel for years. All those damn little children in the theater had no right to be there! :lol:

It was quite enjoyable, it was quite successful at keeping the attention of all age groups. I loved how they suck quite a few gay jokes in about Ken!

Right, today's films...

Adventureland
Not what you'd expect from the adverts/posters. It's one of those films where nothing much really happens, but it's quite emotional and lovely. Also pretty funny in places. Oh, and it's filmed in Kennywood, goons.

Bad Taste
Oh. My. God. Where has this film been all my life?! It's utter crap, and made on a budget of 50p (which is prob still about NZD500! haha), and therefore AMAZING!!!!!!!! It's utterly puerile and juvenile - essentialy, it's a kids school project made by guys that are old enough to know better. Tons of NZ in-jokes, and props almost certainly purchased from The Warehouse just add to it's awesomeness. It made me laugh, it made me want to throw up, it made me laugh some more. In short... watch it now mother****ers !
5/5 (and I NEVER in my life thought I'd be saying THAT about a Peter ****ing Jackson film!)
 
WHAT? How could you have cried! The only movie that I even came close to crying in was Latter 49. I don't see how Toy Story 3 was a crying movie. Sure it was "sad" but everything was all good in the end. [spoiler alert] The toys got a wonderful new home with the girl!
 
Last night I watched Summer of Sam.

I spent half the film being equally fascinated and disgusted by the lead character's lips. They sort of curled up and pushed out far from his face, like a chimpanzie.

And the punk character? What the **** was all that about? I cringed at the "Englishness" of it all.

The plot was weak. At one moment it was a murder-thriller, next it was a gangster film, then it was a "not another teen move" afair. Rubbish. Nothings eemed to glue together, and when it did it was with Pritt-Stick being applied in the bath.

I wouldn't recommend it.

It very good, yeah. It's odd, but I was so bored with the film, I noticed how great the soundtrack was. Usually a great soundtrack enhances a film, here, it made for a good distraction :)

Well done Vadge. One of my all time favourite films. ultimately quotable "I'm a Derek, and Derek's don't run".

Oh, and the gruel scene :lol:

I disagree. I know a lot of people who consider it better, and it's a better made film. It's just that the very poor nature of Bad Taste makes the film a better watch in my opinion. I find Braindead just a little too "Evil Dead 2", whereas Bad Taste is an original comedy horror.

Just remembering more classic Bad Taste stuff though and chuckling to myself in the office... I'll have to get a DVD copy as my VHS tape is shot.

I'm with you on this one Ian, and I remember Slayed being upset with me not liking it either :lol:

I found it really bland and a bit forced and just, well, it was just a bit rubbish really.

I watched the first half of Fantastic Mr Fox last night. Went to have a bath halfway through. I'm in no rush to catch up with the next half, but I might do.

I wasn't convinced by the style of the film at all. I don't know why, I just thought it was a bit Cosgrove Hall 1986 Wind in the Willows. The dialogue was good though, and I it's obviously got the Dahl wit in the story. I just couldn't really engage with it. I agree with Vadge, the Americanism of the voices grated really badly with the setting and "English nature" of the story. It seemed quite at odds.

However, massive thumbs up and immediate extra marks for having my favourite Beach Boys song within the first five minutes :)

I'll give it a proper mark if I watch the rest of it :)

Promise me you'll watch the rest of it? It does take a while to get going, but once it does, it's awesome. Trust me. Oh, and Michael Gambon is fab in it! If only all the characters were English :(
 
^No surprise.

I watched Grown Ups last night. I love Adam Sandler movies and all the people in them so I had to see it if it had Schneider, James, Rock, Spade, and of course, Sandler. But I heard solid reviews that it was kind of funny. They were wrong. I found the movie absolutely HILARIOUS! I don't think there was a moment where I stopped laughing except during the somewhat emotional scenes, but other than that, the movie was really funny and just a good movie in general with some kick ass music as well.

(Salma Hayek was pretty sexy too :wink:)
 
Recently been watching Titus which is a film adaptation of Shakespeare's bloody revenge play Titus Andronicus.

Has a feast of stars including Anthony Hopkins, Alan Cumming, Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
A great film with some great visual interpretations of classic and modern ideas into this play set in Rome. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good tragedy or enjoys a Shakespeare play.

For Ollie's out there it has a high body count and a lot of gore.
 
Watched Where the wild things are the other morning with Maxi-Minor_furie.

It's... Interesting. the hand held approach is curious, but works for what it's trying to get across. The film is superbly made though, and for the most part, the "wild things" and world they live in are very "believable". It's a very kind of real film.

However, it's a bit of a mess. Yuo can see the underlying themes and ideas, but it's never really expanded properly. The characters and personalities are mixed and/or deeply hidden. Interaction is very "autistic"... It's not an easy film to watch, you really need to engage your brain to get along with it.

That's fine in a "serious adult film", but this is a kids film. It's just a bit dull for them, and too difficult to follow what's going on. The film is appealing and lovely to look at, but it's lacking fun and comedy and light heartedness a kids film needs. It's just "wrong".

As a grown up, I enjoyed it to a degree, but it was just too mixed up (and I missed bits trying to keep a four year old engaged in watching it). So it's a 3/5 as an adult, and 1/5 as a child.

The dumbest movie ever! The plot was boring and drawn out. You knew what was going to happen at the end of the move from the first scene.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
For some reason I'd got this into my head that it was a kinda grown up rom-com (ie, in the style of a Hugh Grant type film).... it actually stars Michael Cera. Therefore, as you can imagine, it's a bit more of a teen, coming of age type story (can you imagine him ever doing anything else?!) It's another one where not much happens (almost all of it set in a period of about 12 hours), but again is lovely. It's also very funny in places. Caroline <3

Went to see new French film, Heartbreakers after work today.

It was an absolutely fantastic film, well acted, written and directed. Story is simple, a man is paid to split up relationships by becoming the 'other man' and then he has a job that he sees as impossible, I'll let you guess what happens on that 'impossible' job. It's constantly funny and I had a smile on my face the whole way through the film. It's just great fun for everyone. For once a rom-com that isn't written purely for women to enjoy.

^ Ah, I was going to see that today, BUT, I didn't :/

Instead, I watched a French surrealist film called The Phantom of Liberty in Film Studies today which is quite literally the weirdest piece of film I have ever watched. There was no logic to it whatsoever, and the film had no clear structure other than stories ever so closely linked being so ridiculously funny. The surrealism left us all thinking "Eh?", but we cleared our minds, and some of us were able to understand what the film's messages were. And we also have a homework piece for each scene to establish the message the director wanted to give.

It was quirky, funny, and contained nudity. A really surreal experience, and I want more of it.

I went cinema this evening and watched Get Him to The Greek, which was very disappointing. It lacked, especially in the first half, much humour. This may have been because Russell Brand just isn't funny at all, or maybe the fact the plot was very thin and to be honest, very unfunny. In all fairness, the comedy picked up slightly in the second half, but I left feeling a bit angry that a film which I know was supposed to be a comedy, just was as unfunny as a leprechaun stuck in a lantern.

It missed more than just a few laughs, it missed the point completely.
