What's new

Thorpe 2013

Thing is, Benin, it's much more the indoors and stuffy environment followed by a long squashed walk to escape to some fresh air combined with the backwards rather than the backwards itself that causes the sick for X. It's not that it is the being sick that causes the shutdowns, as such, it's that the sick happens in the enclosed exit tunnel and poses a massive health and safety nightmare.

(If they have turned it backwards) The Swarm is entirely outside, with a quick escape, any vomit that does happen (much like the vomit that occurs from practically any ride) it's not going to close the ride.

Colour me intrigued (I think it's a vivid lilac)!

I agree somewhat Neal, but don't you think from a business perspective, it's not worth the risk? Backwards would increase vom on Swarm at least a little, I think. Not that any of the Merlin attractions have ever made practical on park decisions, ever. Or consider the future practicality or maintainance when designing anything. So this logic does nothing to pursued either way in reality, other than give me something to ponder pointlessly over, which is time I could better invest elsewhere, but I shant, because fun.

In response to Jordan's point, I think having a whole train backwards is not going to happen, because of that "sting in the tail" thing Nic reminded us of.

I also think if it's happening, it will be a case of B&M shipping brand new cars out to them, because as CrazyCoaster (I think) pointed out in the Hollywood Dream topic, it's not a simple modification. So the lack of a change now doesn't mean it's not happening, because it won't exactly take long to change from the parks perspective.

^Ah, so that's why the whole train thing hasn't been entertained, I knew I must have missed something! I suppose it makes sense for the last row to be backwards, gives people the option. But then you have the problem of crowd control, that has already been discussed.

I suppose Thorpe will figure something out if this is the case, but let's face it they don't have the best history with things like this.

Well, they have a front row queue which provides tickets to make sure people who haven't queued for it don't get on the front. So people who want the backwards facing seats could easily be made to queue in there also, they just get a "BACK ROW" ticket as opposed to a "FRONT ROW" one to show to the attendant when they get to the end.

No need to redesign the queue that way. They have a system, inadvertently, already. :)

Yeah that's what I mentioned, but since the front row queue thing is stupid and no one understands it... I still don't know where you join it. Never noticed it, ever. And I've ended up in the front row twice now because no one knew wtf they were doing and I got lucky. Proof it "doesn't work." I can't imagine the stress for attendants on that. Though in ways, I guess it kinda makes the whole thing better for most guests.

Or maybe B&M finally realise people are fed up with their force less coasters and need to do something different.

For me I hope this does not ruin the coaster, the back row was my favourite.

Just a quick thing its not just x people were being sick on, when we went last year people were sick on Swarm as well.

People vom on the weirdest of things... Hocus pocus hall, Bubbleworks...

Ahahaha Bubbleworks? WTF! I can see why people would vom on HPH, but Bubbleworks?! Seasickness maybe?

Even adding a new near miss, which will be pointless for the back two rows cos they won't see it coming...

Logical addition is logical \o/

I look forward to seeing the new theming bits they've added.

And I agree with Kebab that the thought of riding it backwards is good, but I just cannot see why Thorpe, or even B&M have done this. It's only 1 year old, so why make such a major modification?

In reference to X needing an update, Thorpe said this "watch this space... The Swarm isn't the only thing changing for 2013!"

At least they are doing stuff on an 'off year' as such.

I guess I'm excited now too! One backwards row would be a nightmare, but two facilitates everything. The idea is fabulous and unparalleled, I just hope they can pull it off. If we don't like it, then just ride facing forwards.

Maybe the queues won't be so bad since many will abstain.

Erol said the following in the first post -

X:NWO - Cars have finally been turned forwards and could find a new sponsor
X:NWO - Possible sponsorship from MTV
Swarm - The last row on both trains will be turned backwards
Swarm - £1 million investment into its theming due to under-average ratings from the public
And with the FB confirmation that we have to "watch this space" regarding X:\NWO, perhaps it will face forwards and be sponsored by a big brand.

Going back to Swarm. I think the drop will be quite special backwards. I'm not sure how the rest of the ride will feel but it's certainly something I'm looking forward to trying in March.
