Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaurant

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

With the 3DS it's because it displays both eye's image on the same screen and young children don't have the muscle strength/control to properly focus on the two images with each eye so it could lead to lazy eyes. But even then the age restriction on a 3DS is only 6! Source

In an interview with the oculus CEO, he said they chose 13 because they're owned by facebook and that's what their limit is and it seemed reasonable! Source

I reckon Alton are hiding evidence proving that Smiler's crash was an inside job. They've hidden it in Air's tunnel before the lift hill, and don't want anyone to find it.

That's why they've made these 'virtual reality' BLINDFOLDS compulsory.

This Joey. :)

Thanks Dar

The longer explanation to what you're asking about eye development Joey is that there is a huge difference between the development of the eye and prescription.

Whilst the development of the eye is finished by age 3, your prescription will continue to be affected by your lifestyle and surroundings for the rest of your life. The biggest factor is the logical stupidity of the human brain. If your brain becomes aware of bad ocular habits which require less effort to deal with (such as the dual layered screen on the 3DS), it is inherently lazy and will take the easy option. In this case, deciding that what you are seeing is two screens on top of each other and not a 3D image - giving you a "lazy" eye.

That's really cool and way more interesting than I thought. Yay for neuroscience!

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I rode Galactica yesterday. I was underwhelmed by the whole thing, but I think that had something to do with me having to remove my glasses. I couldn't see the VR very well, even after adjusting the focus wheel on the top of the headset.

In regards to wether the VR is compulsory, here is a photo I took yesterday:

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I'm not going until August, so I expect the headsets to have a layer of gunge by the time I get there.
I'll be giving it a miss I think.

The staff are using these to clean the headsets http://clinell.com/product/universal-wipes-50/#overview

They are the same wipes used in hospitals (by me) to clean and disinfect medical equipment such as blood pressure equipment.

On the website says "they can be used as skin friendly" but at work we are told that they dry skin out, so never give them to a patient for anything.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

^ My concern is more around the "wipe and done" aspect of cleaning, really they should be taken apart and cleaned fully every evening, but we'll probably never know if that takes place.
Plus, my wife really liked Air, but doesn't like VR due to sickness(spinning specifically is a no go), so it's struck off yet another ride from their lineup that she won't ride.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I wonder what medical conditions are valid reasons for not wearing them?

Understandable. The wipes are good but one quick wipe between riders isn't great. A good clean with them is around thirty seconds of cleaning, so the wipes can take effect.

The interesting thing is. I got on the ride with my glasses on. I was offered the chance to ride without VR by the ride op. If I rode without VR I could wear my glasses.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

Someone else theorised that the rule is to prevent people removing them mid ride. That sounds plausible. In fact, the wording even sounds like it means that.

Either way, if you wanna ride sans headset, just say you can't due to a medical issue. If they ask what tell them to mind their own business. Problem solved. Middle finger.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I can maybe see them checking for the red disabled rider wristbands and using those to distinguish.

Like I said on TST it's all well and good saying you won't wear the headset but if they say you have to wear it, you either wear it or don't ride.

For better or worse it's no longer Air, it's Galactica and Galactica needs a headset to be worn.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I guess you could make up a medical condition. Tell them you suffer from inflammatory eye syndrome and can't have your eyes too close to any screens. That sounds plausible right? I doubt the teenage ride hosts studying A level geography will question it too much.

So I'm confused ; people (on CF facebook) saying they rode without VR recently - and what Dan says here, "glasses" aren't usually described as a medical condition and "offered" doesn't really sound like "must" at all does it.

Real mess-up in comms from AT though, they need to be giving consistent messages in the park, on their website and on social media.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I don't see why AT don't allow the choice. I mean, it saves time, and saves the wipes they use as well if someone doesn't want to ride with it. Surely AT would benefit from it?

This. As much as the majority of us want the option to ride "Air", the fact is we can't. It's not our coaster, it's Alton Towers and if they say you must wear a headset, you must. I can see no valid reason for this except they've spent tonnes of dosh making it VR and we all better ruddy well enjoy it.

It's not like we can vote with our feet and not ride it. By the sounds of it, this ride will always have a queue and dispatch full trains nearly every time. It would take a dramatically sharp downturn in riders for them to reverse their decision. And that ain't going to happen this year.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

They'll relax on it eventually but yeah, at the moment they'll want to 'force' as many people as possible to experience it.

Coaster force? It'll never catch on.

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

Did Galactica today and it was pretty bad. I couldn't get my goggles to focus at all. I could see a black section around the outside when i turned my head. Half the time vibrations made it difficult to see anything. Also i didn't feel immersed in the experience because the vr felt low quality. On the plus side it advertised a 45 min queue and it ended up being 20 because no one went over the bridge and that side was empty

Re: Alton Towers' Galactica VR coaster/Rollercoaster Restaur

I don't think the VR will last? I just can't see the coaster still having VR in 5 or 6 years time.
