Formula 1 2009

I think the best thing about the test so far was Button's performance yesterday. The car had only just become available, no other testing done on it, and he was top of the time sheets for most of the day. Shows he's still got it.
He never didn't have it mate, he's always been a decent and consistent driver, in recent years he's just had a crap car.

Plus it does show that this 2009 car which has been being prepared since the latter part of 2006, and has been praised multiple times by the former Honda people, is actually the decent package that they said it would be. :)

(Button to beat Hamilton this season  )

Yeah, 'decent and consistent', not 'impressive and title challenging', I can't see Button ever succeeding now, he's passed his peak, and if he hadn't have had such an allegiance to Honda et al, he might've had a better chance to succeed. As it is, that win in Hungary will be his 'peak'.

As for Brawn GP, they've got Ross Brawn driving them, so i'd never rule out a decent result or two, he is a bit of a genius. Mind you, as creative as he can get with strategy, he's crap at naming teams...

But I think that decent and consistent (coupled with a quick car) wins you championships.

Hill is a fine example of this, not an exceptional talent like Prost, Senna and Schumacher. But decent, taking the title in 2006 because he had a good car to go with his abilities.

Hakkinen is another, although he was a fair bit better than Hill, he is still not a "top" talent.

So if the imaginatively named Brawn GP is competitive, then Jenson or perhaps even Rubens could challenge in the championship

I can't see them being any more competitive than a Toyota or a Williams though. With a bit of exceptional speed or tactics, they might spring the odd surprise, but other than that, they'll be doing no better than midfield. Don't forget Ross Brawn set himself a 2-year plan to get Honda on top of things before all these setbacks. If the last few months haven't impacted on that i'll be surprised.

It does need to be an exceptional car to a get a decent, consistent driver to the title though. The late '90s Williams or the early '00s McLaren were exceptional cars, I mean even Villeneuve managed a world title in that Williams! Barrichello is a more consistent, and regularly quicker driver than Button, and even he didn't manage the world title in a good car (albeit he had to succumb to the powers of Schumacher) so I can't see Button suddenly becoming the man to beat this year.

^My point exactly sir :)

I totally agree with you that unless the car is exceptional then he will not be the man to beat this year. But if it is competitive, he is the sort of driver that could win races and potentially what is shaping up to be a very closely fought title between a handful of teams and drivers.

Yeah, it'll definitely be closer this season, but if anyone's the man to watch, it'll be Sebastien Vettel. That Red Bull is looking quick, and with Vettel in it, it could do some good things!

Oh thank God that someone agrees with me! I've been saying since 2007 that he is going to be something special when given a quick car. Watching him at the Race of Champions was definitely something to behold!

And he has a personality, unlike Hamilton.

I like drivers with personalities. Which is why I like Kimi.

There are a few drivers to watch out for next year and Vettel is one of them thats for sure.

The guy is fast and makes few mistakes now.

I am impressed with the Brawn car, I hope Jensen can have a good year.

Things at Mclaren look bad at the moment so will be very interesting to see how Lewis copes without a winning car (at the moment).

It will be a close year as people have said, yes its only testing but all the cars seem to be covered by just over a second.

I swear up until yesterday, the talk was of Ferrari lagging behind McLaren, because McLaren are making the best use of KERS?

Either way, Kubica and Vettel to push Alonso and Raikkonnen at the top. Hamilton will be up there with Massa too, but I think a bad season for both of them is coming.

Oh, and you like Raikkonen for his personality? I didn't know he had one.

I was waiting for that, all the Fins are brilliant! Their sense of humour is fantastic! So dry! Hakkinen was the same (and look at him now, he's eased up a bit and he's hilarious), Atte Mustonen in F3 for the past couple of seasons was the same too.

Kimi's pretty well known for being an absolute animal away from the circuits too.

I swear they all pretend they're really miserable just to irritate the journalists. Which entertains me.

Remember this classic interview with Martin Brundle.

I like him too because he is so laid back and he couldn't give a **** to make an effort in interviews. Hakkinen I thought was bit more louder than Kimi but I used to think he was crazy. You would never know what he would come out with in interviews.

Yeah I was going to say Kimi in Brazil that year was so funny :)

Mika as well make me laugh "The Micheal"

Well what can I say, the Brawn is a decent car as I said it would be! :)

McLaren are doing poorly, as I hoped they would be :)

And the Ferrari is competitive as I wanted it to be :)

And I have a tenner on Button to get more points than Hamilton, which I put on when the car was launched at 50/1! Watch this space

A new rule change is to be brought in for 2009 which will mean that this year's Formula One title will go to the driver who wins the most races rather than the most points, the sport's governing body has said.

But of course it's stupid, it was Ecclestone's idea. Besides, it's not as stupid as the way they used to do it with the season split into two halves and a number of the best races from each half contributed to the total score.

Anyway, I might as well say it, mainly because it needs to be said, this will probably end favouring Ferrari, as the Mclarens are more consistent, but perhaps win fewer races.

Although, Kimi has his fair share of #2s as well :p
