What's new

Kolmården's Djurpark | Wildfire | RMC Wooden Coaster

I'll do it, just need to inspect and find the .jpg link... duh.

Tada!

Christ that's sexy. It's the Zero G stall I think, first inversion.

Cranes seem to be operational again, look at that lift structure!!!

Yep, I forgot to write that but the strike ended late sunday night, so they only lost a week.

That lift structure (assuming that's what the brown structure going away from the camera) doesn't look very wooden to me?

That's because it's steel

I cannot wait for this, hopefully more images are gonna start popping up as it's the peak construction time, YAY.

The lift itself as well as a couple of towers holding the lift are made from steel, with wood structure in between the steel supports, the drop turnaround and the rest of the structure will be all wooden.
It's basically a better looking Goliath lift structure with the coaster portion wooden.

Ahh gotcha. I'd misinterpreted the previous conversation about the lift hill structure (not being Goliath-style) to mean it was all going to be wooden.

That's me babe ;)

But, yeah, they announced that they were doing this metal structure in the last release of concept art, I would ove to know why, can you share any light, Hixee?

No, but I can take some educated guesses.

Steel requires fewer 'major' load bearing footers. With a wooden structure all of the footers carry the load equally (in an ideal world). It's why wooden footers are so much smaller and shallower, as each one isn't doing as much work. That's great if you can actually place loads of small footers, but there's a chance (given the insane and rocky terrain this coaster is going over) that they could only get a few much larger footers in, meaning a steel structure with some wooden bracing was a better solution.

Steel is quicker once you're on site. You let someone else sort out all of the tricky stuff before the components arrive on site. This saves time and effort, which might be helpful when a lot of the winter is tricky to build in in Sweden

Maybe maintenance is going to be tricky (in terms of access), so reducing the number of connections to check was factored in.

It could have simply been an aesthetic request by the park.

From a structural engineering standpoint, I think the first (and a bit the second) points are probably the most valid, but it's very plausible I've overlooked another factor!

Good news! Kolmården have now clarified that the premiere will still be held on the 18th of June, measures will be taken to catch up with the time lost during the strike.

Recent vid, last week's one was embarrassingly bad so the less said the better.

As well as some more pics.

It's so strange how there's this like mammoth steel structure, then wooden supports, then another massive steel structure - it's sort of aesthetically displeasing?
