What's new

"Now Showing"

Last night I went to a free prewview screening for Liam Neesons new film, Taken. I have to be honest here, I wasn't expecting much but I was intrigued. Luckily the film was great though, had way too many shakycam on e moments and the end scene was pointless but apart from that it was good. I suppose the dialogue could have been better in places too but it felt real and gritty. I was also really shocked by some scenes as they didnt translate some of the foreign dialogue yet somehow it just added to the film, made it work better. I'll try and explain this, Liam Neesons character doesn't understand them, so you won't too, quite clever really.

Rating: 4/5

****ING HELL!

Just finished watching a film called Rec. It's a Spanish film but it has subtitles. It's filmed in the same way as 'Cloverfeild' and the 'Blair Witch project'.
I had never heard of this film but went into the DVD section of ASDA and read the summary so went home and did some research on it.
Through it's reviews they've said that it contains one of the scariest scenes in any horror movie. AND IT ****ING WELL LIVES UP TO IT. The final scene was the most amazing, frightening, terrifying scene I have seen in my whole live.
The whole film is about a news reporter and a cameraman who are filming at a fire station to record what they get up to during the night shifts. They get called out with news that an old lady has got trapped in her apartment so they set of to see what they can do. Upon arrival, many of the other residents are gathered on the ground floor by the staircase as they were hearing screams coming from her apartment even though see lives on her own. The fire brigade and some police officers go up to have a look. From then on it's a crazy ass horror tale as the building gets blocked off and they are refused to be let out. But they aren't being told why.
There are loads of moments that make you jump and unlike most films where it's really predictable they seem to know the right moments to catch you off gaurd.

And like I said that final scene is just. AAARRRRGGGGGGGGHHHH
Go watch it now. If you dare.

Final score:
9.9/10 (For being the only film to truly scare me)

I went to see Tropic Thunder yesterday. I didn't know a lot about it before I went, but my flatmates wanted to see it, so I went along for the ride.

It turned out to be one of those films that are soooo stupid, and you should hate, but are so funny, you don't care. Great film. Seriously, will end up there with stuff like Anchorman and Zoolander, which it's along the same lines as.

For those of you who don't believe me how terrifying Rec is then take a look at this video.
It was filmed at the FrightFest in Glasgow, and it shows the audiences reactions while watching the film. Bear in mind that these are people who seek out horror films. So if it scares them this much then it kinda gives you an idea. :p

Also the Americans are doing a remake of 'Rec' called 'Quarantine'. So I highly recommend that you see Rec before the Americans go and ruin yet another foreign horror film (when will they come up with they're own ideas  ).

Doomsday:
I had no idea what to expect from this film and only had a vague idea of the storyline. All I can say is...
Wow! :)
The way this film is done was brilliant.
Recommend this film to everyone (unless you don't like gore and good ovies). :p
9/10
Ollie, it's a truly appalling film! Utter rubbish, a total mess! I've neved walked out on a film, but I nearly did on this; I wanted the 2 hours of my life back.

Only thing I'll agree with is that it's suprisingly well shot.

I think if we went into a Blockbuster to pick a film, we'd end up in a fight :p.

I agree that the mixtures of different genre's it tries to do should make it rubbish. But I think they do it really well. The story wasn't the main thing I was worried about watching Doomsday as it was shot really well. :p

Just watched [Rec] too, Ollie made me :p!

It is actualy very creepy in parts and prettys cary too!

The ending is quiete sinister and like arghhhh to watch lol!

Recommend it deffo!

Kill Bill Vol. 1

Short 'n' sweet, but LOVED IT! Can't wait to see the second one.

Very atmospheric, and the opening scenes were without doubt some of the best I've seen in a film.

10/10.

Tropic Thunder - 4/10

The laughs were minimal, although Stiller had said this movie was an action first, comedy later movie I think it was jst an excuse.
The story was silly, as you'd expect from a Stiller film, but for some reason just didn't work for me, as much as I loved Dodgeball.

Robert Downy Junior was the films only saving grace, in my opinion. He was brilliant and hilarious in every scene, I just hope this would be the last 'comedy' he appears in - well, for a while at least. I just don't want him to be typecast (although, not a big fan of his.........) (weird)

Tom Cruise should die.

Jack Black, when was the last time he was funny?

Ben Stiller was fine, just like every other role, so there wasn't much to work on.
His movies are good, but just way too samey now.

As much as this movie was supposed to be 'lol' funny, and you can tell that the writers had good intentions I just think it failed in producing a comedy hit......
Using big actors to portray the stupidity of over-paid Hollywood has been done and it's getting boring now.

I don't hate the movie, I though it was good. But it was JUST good, that's why I gave it a 4/10.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Watched this tonight in Film class, and I figured it would be a crappy western.

Little did I know it would be a fantastic movie. By FAR the best western I have ever seen. Laughs throughout, acting was pretty good.. I really found nothing wrong with this movie.. asides from one or two things.. but it was made in 1969.. I'm not gonna bust its balls for it.

9.5/10

^I concur Mr Snoo. That film is awesome, a classic that actually stands up to all its hype.

C.M.Sean_Rohan, I have to say that I disagree on your opinion of Tropic Thunder, I thought it was hilarious and Jack Black was great (more a serious actor rather than looking at him as a comedian). Then again I think its all down to what you find funny so some peeps will laugh more than others, same goes for every comedy ever made. For the record, I hate the film Dodgeball.

Butch Cassidy is superb, I love it! It's one of those films I caught one Sunday afternoon in my youth which shocked me by how good it was. It's odd, now that I'm 'net savvy', I discover all these films I loved as a youngster which are called 'classics'. Back then, you never really knew how good things were, because there just wasn't a social group beyond half a mile of your house.

I watched The Lady Killers only the original version last night. Great stuff, but not what I'd call classic. Not sure if I prefer the remake or not. The remake was certainly the better film, but I loved the quaintness of the original. It also was much cleaner and straightforward. The remake muddied things a little too much.
Still, well worth a watch!

Signs

I really enjoyed this movie, and was one of those movies that keep you excited and wondering what will happen next. However, the end totally ruined it for me; it made it seem like a complete joke. I wish they had never even shown the aliens, because that would've probably made it less stupid and it'd keep you wondering what they looked like. Unfortunately, they looked stupid, and sprayed poison gas outta their hands. Lame.

But, I really enjoyed 2/3 of the movie, so I'll give it 7/10.
