Kolmården's Djurpark | Wildfire | RMC Wooden Coaster

Re: Kolmårdens Djurpark | Wildfire | RMC Wooden Coaster

Oh thats bad news.... naughty Swedish NIMBYs :(

Re: Kolmårdens Djurpark | Wildfire | RMC Wooden Coaster

Is this an appropriate time for me to dig into my Great Book of Derogatory Terms for Swedes and find some choice words to call the NIMBYs?

Sucks to hear they lost permission. Hopefully, it will be sorted out and the ride still built.

Re: Kolmårdens Djurpark | Wildfire | RMC Wooden Coaster

It would appear the conflict is that the county board needs more plan details, such as proximity to the supposed nature reserve that sits next to the zoo.

In which case, if the zoo can provide planning that shows the roller coaster does not pose a threat to the nature reserve, things should be in the clear.

But indeed, true NIMBYism at its finest. Or in this case, NIMNR: Not-In-My-Nature-Reserve.

Is it the locals complaining? If so, I totally get them, I've found this coaster a very weird choice for Kolmården from the day it was announced. It is big and vulgar and doesn't fit the park at all. They have such a potential with the mountains and woodlands and I think they should have gone with something more discreet. Something like Boulder Dash that could hide itself in the woods.

Probably not the reason the locals are complaining, but I still felt like sharing my thoughts.

^ At least according to the citation, the county board revoked the permits on the basis of being located too close to a nature reserve. If there were locals that had a bone to pick over the new coaster, I would be certain that factored into the appeal.

The county board actually supported the ride, it's the people (around 20) who have filed appeals who believe it's a threat to the nature and the animals.

The ride was scheduled to restart construction in April, but that's out of the question according to the CEO. They are still hoping for 2016, but I just don't see it happening.

An appeal may be the fast way for them to get it approved, but eventually a zoning plan will need to be created, problem is that it usually take years for something this controversial.

I also wonder if they dare to appeal it to the Land and Environment Court, the guys in there aren't exactly cute little rabbits.

^ Does every country have these kind of people? I'm all in for saving the nature and everything, but does Sweden really need so much of this preserved habitat? I mean it's a gigantic, forested country and I believe that a roller coaster wouldn't hurt the environment even close to as much as the hundreds of kilometres of highways and similar infrastructure do...

^Perhaps nationwide wildlife preservation isn't coming into this. Is the park's surrounding community prides themselves in their wildlife, they don't want a massive rollercoaster threatening that?

It's like Alton/Farley citizens don't want them to build a massive coaster over their valley, where there are (apparently) hundreds of protected trees. The UK has thousands of protected trees and valleys, so it's not like building one coaster will impact on the entire nation. What the locals are worried about in both cases is how the coaster may damage their community, as opposed to everyone's community, if that makes sense?

^If my Swedish doesn't fail me completely, it would be "Repslagare".

The appropriate Swedish term would be more akin to the Norwegian "gledesdreper" or something, though.

For most of the developed world, any major construction project requires permitting from an authoritative board, often accompanied by an environmental analysis when appropriate. Noise complaints can be a popular issue that is raised as well.

Not being savvy to Swedish bureaucracy, I would be interested as to what kind of appeals process this could take, and if the zoo would have standing to create a legal case if Wildfire's plans were ultimately not approved.

Sounds like my research is cut out for this weekend. ;)

This was just posted on the main Wildfire Site

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH WILDFIRE?
The process of our awaited construction of Wildfire and planned launch in 2016 has now been intensified. We hope for a positive decision from the authorities in the next months. We’ll keep you posted, hold on!

Still not changing the opening year from 2016 so they must have some hope at the moment.

There's no way they are opening it in 2016, there's way too much bureaucracy left they need to go through. The new site is probably just for marketing. I wrote this in another thread:

All hopes of ever getting Wildfire to open sometime in 2016 is officially gone I'm afraid.

The park appealed to the higher Land and Environment Court and they were awaiting a hearing sometime this summer. It has however now been decided by "Supreme" Land and Environment Court that a small group of people who own a private road a bit further down the park has he right to appeal the project. Their right to appeal was overruled earlier by both the County Board and the Land and Environment Court.

But now it has been decided that they should be allowed to appeal, and the case will go back to the County Board again.

I'm not really following all the different directions this is taking, but I think that the case must now be treated by the County Board again before the Land and Environment Court can treat it, I don't think they will treat it parallel with each other. And we all know that the County Board isn't really that enthusiastic about the project as well..

I'm really starting to feel that Parks and Resorts should just invest the Wildfire money in the other parks for the next years, and start making a proper zoning plan for Kolmården, and then get Wildfire of the ground. There is just to much bureaucracy in this country..

In a surprising move the permission has been given! =D> =D> =D>

The construction will start ASAP. A new schedule will be worked up with RMC and Vekoma. They are hoping for a late spring opening.

OMG YES!!!! Such good news :--D Seems like I'll be visiting Sweden for the fourth consecutive year, but I don't mind because Sweden <3
