What's new

The Games we play...

GET THAT AND REZ HD OR JUST GET CATHERINE ON PS3 OR MAYBE UH, something. The XBLA has a wonderful.assortment of rereleases of games that are eye bleedingly expensive. Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes beening 2 prime examples, You may want to get MW3 for as cheap as humanly possible, it's support is biased to 360 and everyone needs a mindnumbingly dross game. Import Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey or Devil Survivor on the DS from play asia? Uh, I KNOW! If you get the 360, Deadly Premonition! it's so amazingly bizarre.

I think it will all depend on what they actually have in stock to be honest and what the prices are. I don't want to actually hand over cash for a 360 if I can avoid it :p

MMF wants a replacement PSP, but I'm not paynig Sony for one of those either, but if they have one second hand that's fine. So it all really depends on stock, prices and how much over £100 I manage with my trade-ins :)

MW3? Seriously?

Well, I got the 360 then... Initial thoughts?

It's hard to describe really. The disappointment of being right I guess?

Just as I thought, there's just nothing to differentiate between the 360 and the PS3 except for a handful of games. I prefer the general interface on the PS3 (XMB), but the 360 one is fine too. The avatar system isn't as good as Nintendos for producing a simulacrum-of_furie, but it's much better than Sony's offering, as is the whole friend interaction thing compared to the bloated Home thing Sony offer.

There's a general "corporate professionalism" about the 360. It's been designed and implemented by teams specifically working of set issues and advancements. It's very clean and sharp, but feels a little sterile. It's not better or worse than the Japanese approach (which feels a bit disjointed and "we'll just stuff something in and make it fit" that both the Wii and PS3 have) though, just different :)

It's just... Why is there all this fanboy fighting? They're just different flavours of the same thing. I don't think I'll ever get used to the controller though, but it's not a deal breaker.

So there we are then, the 360 is just another console. It does it's job perfectly well. I'm not going to be forking out for Gold membership though.

As for Forza 4? I got the demo and was immediately underwhelmed. I do like my racing games and it felt very arcade, stupidly arcade in fact. With all assists off and set to full simulation, I shouldn't be able to win races on my first go. Collision was a nuisance too, but better than Shift 2's attempt at it.

However, there's a good feel about it I think and there's fun hiding away in there. It's just a bit of a shock after playing quite hard "sims" like GT5 and Shift 2. It's not as challenging to keep the car on the road, but I've always thought that the "sims" are more unrealistic than a lot of arcade racers (like Grid).

It comes down to the surrounding game system though. GT5 encourages massive amounts of grinding. You can take an F1 car out against a Toyota Yaris, just to get in the laps, complete the series and take your cash. It rarely forces you into a challenge, and the entire game just becomes "half an hour now way I'll lose in this race series to unlock a car I need for a new race series, which I can upgrade to be unbeatable". When GT5 challenges, it's a superb game, but it happens for perhaps 10% of the time you play it.

It's the surrounding system you see that makes a game worth playing or not. Of course, I could make the challenge myself and only race in a Yaris against the other Yaris', but in those cases the game is boring and very, very tough (the AI very rarely makes the slightest mistake). You need it to be fun while you're racing AND have a reason to race.

I can grab Forza 3 for nothing, so I'll start there I think. Any other recommended games (not by Kim) please put them forward. I like slightly quirky stuff generally, nothing that involves shooting unless it's something really special (so not Gears, Halo, etc).

It's tempting, but the price has to be right... Plus. I need to work out how to bloody find things...

It's in the Games section somewhere... It's terribly layed out that bit. Unless you do plan on getting a game to play online then you can just avoid a gold subscription. I don't think you need it for parties and downloading off the market place. Just playing against other people and netflix or what ever. So getting Gears and Halo is pretty silly with out intending to play online and be called a faggot or insulted because of your african heritage followed by what all the 13 year olds have done to your mother.

But yeah, Deadly Premonition is the only exclusive I can think of that's worth getting. Mass Effect is boring as ****. Gears and Halo I've already talked about. Forza you've already tried. Consoles these days really are staring to just blend into one another, there practically is now huge difference between ports and hardly any exclusives. So yeah, try find out where the downloadable games are... May find some salvation in there, the even more hidden Indie section has Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death. They seem good.

Edit:- Just had a look at the 360 excusives. It was painful.

Anyone with a PS3 should try the Starhawk beta. Stunningly good fun, works best if you're in a team, but the addition of constructing your own features (walls, jets, vehicles, sniper towers, turrets etc...) is an absolutely stunning one.

Starhawk, like Warhawk, is a desolate and empty experience... Massive open expanses, gorgeously created, superb weapons and vehicles and twenty minutes between seeing other people.

It is a required team work game otherwise it's lonely as hell, but even then, there's still death and a five minute hike to anybody else. If it's your thing, fine, it's a gorgeous game, but so much nothing between the action.

My only real complaint is how hard it is to find stuff. I looked in "Demos" and grabbed a load. Then looking somewhere else I found more that weren't listed under demos. Digging thnigs out requires some kind of 14th sense. I also don't like how it doesn't boot up and leave you at games. It's a games console, assume I want to play games (though this may be something you can change). It's probably all not being used to it and it being a little unfamiliar. I know that it's hard to have so much content presented to a new user.

I do need something with Cthulhu in it though :)

Alan Wake will happen, as I think will Viva Pinata eventually and I'm going to get Forza 3 because it's pretty much free. Possibly Gears 2 and Project Gotham Racing 4 for the same reason. Just to give everything a good try out for very little money (the advantages of late entry is finding very good older games for just a couple of quid).

See I was really into Warhawk before I started playing Cod a bit more, and I did worry that having tried and failed to like the slower paced Resistance 3 online that I'd dislike Starhawk because it's not 'action' packed enough compared to kill-a-minute Cod. I've only played the beta with a group of mates though so that's why it tends to be more enjoyable, decide who attacks/defends, builds what etc...

On a whim went into Gamestation earlier and picked up Oblivion (after being pestered for ages to get it) and Red Faction Guerrilla for a tenner. First impression on Oblivion? Meh. Suppose I'm still being told the basics and it'll pick up a bit after this. Hopefully.

When something is downloaded hit you MAJESTIC Xbox™®© BUTTON and it brings up the thingy window directly related to that, same for when friends sign in or send you an invite to something. Good luck finding **** still. I still have no clue since they updated it.

I think you'd really dig Alan Wake Phil.

It's basically Stephen King meets Twin Peaks. It's awesome.

I really liked Gears 1+2, they're so cheap like you say so certainly worth it. 3 was gash though.

Scribble out Stephen King, Keep the Twin Peaks, add this song.

And some Turkey, Strawberry Jam and Cereal sandwiches and you get:

It really has to be played to believe the utter lunacy of it.

I've been getting back into Skyrim recently. It's still really ace, and now I have an epic ebony bow. Shwing.

Yeah, it's one of those game where you really need to be part of a well organised team, otherwise it's just "meh". I can see the potential, but I don't have the time to put into the game or building relationships with teams to get the most out of it. It's a game that requires a lot of effort, but rewards a lot.

Yep, I'll pick up Alan Wake at some point in the not so distant future. I got Gears 2 and PGR 4 from Game with my final points last night. Not had a chance to play Gears 2 yet, but I have PGR 4; it's, erm, dated

Looks fun enough, but it's just a bit too simple these days.

Downloaded the demo of Trials, which is as awesome as promised and also the demo of Forza 3, which I think is much better than Forza 4's demo. Okay, you can't tell a full game from a demo, but I preferred the feel of Forza 3 and the way it was presented.

Still struggling with the interface though and so is MMF :(

I'm waiting for the DLC to come out before I get back into it. I've done all the main missions so it's just pottering about. May as well potter about while having new missions too :)

^ I actually like Fifa street, well when I say I like, I mean I don`t hate like the other 3. Fifa Street 3 was especially bad, really cartoony and just an all round awful game. the new one is quite playable and dare I say quite enjoyable. I haven't played much of it yet, but what I have played I have liked.

In other news, Game has gone into administration today, the company has £21M in rent to be payed by Sunday.
